Chapter 55: A Piece of Solitude

Soul meets soul on lovers' lips. -Percy Bysshe Shelley

The days and weeks have passed like a blur in the night. Detective Jackson is still working the case. No one has seen or heard from Aaron, Stephen - or his father - since I was kidnapped. And Shawn was picked up for questioning while I was in the hospital and confessed to stealing the sedatives.

It's funny. Maria and my mother refuse to leave my side. All I really want is a small piece of solitude. During the day, and at night, they take turns sitting with me. I'm sleeping better, but I still wake in the middle of the night. Drake, he barely speaks to me. It seems the more time that passes, the longer he stays away from the house. He avoids contact every chance he gets.

My only escape is Maggie, the pink-nosed, three-year-old white appaloosa. I spend much of my free time in her stall, brushing her coat and rubbing cream onto her wounds.
