The mention of Melva being a werewolf reminded her of Vance's conversation with his pack member, Davis, in the past that he had no intention of inviting her to join his pack. However, if she remembered correctly, Vance had not confirmed that he had no intention in turning her into a werewolf. What if he wanted her to become a werewolf and form her own pack to aid him in fights or something like that?
She had zero interest in becoming one of them after knowing the ill deeds they had been committing and what they were capable of doing. She was a future mate of a werewolf who had used to eat human flesh to gain power. That was certainly not a good deed in her eyes. They were predators who killed not only supernatural creatures but also humans as if it was a common thing to do in their daily lives.
Although Vance had claimed he had not done something monstrous like that after he had been cursed, there was no guarantee he would not do that again if he found a way to lift his curse. She shivered at the image of Vance regressing back into his old habit and she wondered if it was better to let him suffer forever under the influence of the curse instead. That way she did not need to worry about being eaten once every two years.
However, if Vance was planning to turn her into a werewolf, then there would be no need to worry about that because she would no longer be human. Then again, she was not interested in running around in the woods wearing a wolf costume and ripping apart her prey with her fangs. Hunting would be much more enjoyable if she was using a bow and not her teeth.
"Is it possible to turn me into a werewolf, Your Grace?" asked Melva, feigning curiosity even if she had deduced from a long time ago that it was possible. She only did not know how. The only thing that interested her was all the information about them. She was thirsty for knowledge.
Vance adjusted his robe that was not properly worn due to his haste and showed his skin. He eyed her without turning his face. "Why are you asking? Are you interested in becoming one?"
Melva shook her head so quickly that she was concerned her neck muscle would get strained. "I am merely asking because I want to know if it is possible."
Vance hummed with interest. "You and your curious mind. Your questions are endless, not that I mind. I like how you are always curious."
"I would prefer it if you just answer my question, Your Grace."
"It is a compliment. Why don't you like it when I compliment you? I thought ladies loved to be praised." Vance leaned closer to her, looking closely at her face. "I cannot believe my eyes. You are blushing. I never thought you were capable of it from how stubborn and confident you are."
A frown appeared on Melva's face at his comment. Was he being sarcastic? Because it sounded very much like another insult of his. Therefore, she also responded with sarcasm. "I am a human, Your Grace. We blush because we have blood flowing in our veins."
Vance raised a brow upon hearing her response and chuckled in amusement. "Alright. I cannot win against you. I will just answer the question. It is indeed possible to turn a human into a werewolf. You have met Davis. He was once a human. I turned him."
"Were you also a human once?" Although it was highly unlikely since nothing he did was humane, she needed the confirmation from the person himself. There was still a very small probability that he might have been human before. If so, it was scary to know how being a werewolf could cause someone to lose their humanity, as though forgetting they were once human.
Vance burst into laughter, as if finding Melva's concern ridiculous. "Heavens, no. I am born a werewolf. Both my parents are werewolves. We are what you call pure blood werewolves. We are stronger than the ones who were bitten."
"Is that how you turn humans into werewolves? By biting them?" asked Melva, because this was what she wanted to know in the first place.
Vance nodded slowly. "Yes, you are correct. However, it is not possible to make sure that you would survive the bite. The risk is just that high. Some succeeded and turned into werewolves, while some failed and died because their body could not survive the sudden change. I personally will not turn anyone into one if it is not the last choice they have to continue living. I do not want to be responsible for someone's death because of my bite. It will smear my clean reputation as a duke with mud, don't you agree?"
Melva scoffed. There he went again with his precious pride. She was getting tired of hearing him bragging about how good of a man he was, when he had been killing so many humans before. "You just do not want to be seen as someone who makes mistakes, because you should be a perfect werewolf. Am I right, Your Grace?"
Sighing exasperatedly, Vance leaned back and looked at her carefully as if he was trying to figure out what she was thinking about. "You always find a way to twist my words. Am I that bad of a man in your eyes?"
Melva merely answered with a shrug. There was no way of knowing whether he was good or bad, because she barely knew him. And she was a cautious woman who always thought twice before deciding to believe in someone's words. She would not trust someone if she was not completely sure.
"I will not hurt you. You have my word," promised Vance.
That was comforting to know, however, Melva was already aware of that. Vance would gain nothing from hurting her, thus she was certain he would never hurt her. It was the Ichorhold's townspeople that she was concerned about. He had mentioned his visit to Ichorhold before, which meant that it was possible for him to travel there even if she had no idea how. He could easily hurt them if she betrayed him or things didn't go his way.
"What about the townspeople back in Ichorhold?" Melva knew his answer to this, but she had to hear it directly from him.
"I will not hurt them as long as you behave. It is written in the contract. You do not need to worry about it." Vance reassured her, but his words didn't sound like a reassurance at all. It was more of a threat.
Upon arriving in the manor, Vance immediately headed towards his chamber to properly change because his robe was too revealing to be worn in front of other people. And it dawned on her that he had no problems wearing it for her eyes to see. Was their relationship considered that intimate now? She quickly shook off her thoughts. This was not the right time and place to think about it.
"Are you hungry?" asked Vance after he was done changing.
She shook her head to answer his question.
Melva was asked to come inside his chamber while he was changing and she had to stare straight at the wall the entire time because of his awful decision not to change in the bathroom. Why had he taken her to his chamber if he was about to change? Was it because she had seen him naked in the woods? It only made her blush further, so she stopped wondering about it in her mind.
Someone knocked on the door and Vance ordered the person to come inside. It was then when she realised why Vance asked her to wait inside his chamber. He called a physician to visit his chamber and treat her injuries.
The whole time while the physician was treating her injuries, Vance was holding her hand by her side, squeezing it lightly everytime she grimaced in pain. She had not expected him to do this, but her mind convinced her that it was only because he wanted to look like a gentleman in front of the physician. The real him was when they were alone.
"Do you want to take a bath and change your clothes first?" asked Vance after the physician was done with treating her wounds and left his chamber. "I will visit the woman we found in the woods earlier and ask her a few things. According to the physician, she has regained her consciousness."
"It is alright. I will take a bath and change later after visiting the werewolf." Melva would not let the opportunity to find out who she was and why she had attacked her slip away.
"Your dress is ripped apart and stained with blood. Are you sure?" asked Vance, trying to change her mind.
Melva squinted her eyes because she found his reluctance to bring her with him suspicious. "I already said it is alright. You do not want me to come with you. May I ask why?"
Vance sighed defeatedly, giving in and telling the truth. "Because you might not like what I will ask her."
