Moon Crazed (2)

The ground was red with blood. Human blood, as the werewolves rarely bled from the claws of the vampires. The vampires had retreated a while ago, as there was no one standing against the moon crazed beasts as they howled to the moon and walked around aimlessly.

Irene clenched her fists. "Why were they outside?" She snarled. The younger purebloods were forbidden from leaving their respective houses during a full moon. What could have caused them to leave and become moon-crazed like this? And on such an important night too!

"I don't know." Lord Ruthvic muttered. "We are too late," He added, pointing at the bloody ground. "They've already killed."

Irene nodded. "We need to stop them. We'll deal with the damage done later."

"And here she comes!" Ruby exclaimed with an over the top tone. She pointed at the woman clad in white. "Irene?" Aoric mumbled as she stepped onto the blood covered plaza. "What's she doing here?"

"She's their matriarch. It's on her to protect them on a full moon, and yet she was busy with…" Ruby shrugged. "Whatever. I don't even want to guess. But she's late, her people have drawn human blood." Her brows furrowed. "The Sorcerer will be very unhappy."

Aoric nodded. "There were people that died." He mumbled. His gaze followed Irene, who walked up to the nearest werewolf. A group of a older men followed her. As soon as they stepped into the plaza, they scattered, going to the nearest crazed werewolves.

Irene walked up to the crazed werewolf, she grabbed his neck and with a swift motion, threw him across the plaza.

Aoric's eyes widened.

"She's pissed." Ruby commented with a grin on her face. "Someone must have disobeyed her." She glanced at Aoric. "Now that I think about, how do you know her name?" She moved closer to him. Her footsteps on the tiled roof were oddly silent.

"She hired me for something." Aoric muttered. "Is she trying to kill them?"

Ruby laughed out loud. "She couldn't even if she wanted to!" She said with a wicked smile. "This is her mother's doing."

"What do you mean she can't?"

Ruby smiled, then sat besides him. "Do you know what it takes to kill a vampire?"

Aoric shook his head. "Not really, no."

"Good." She smiled. "Let's keep it that way. And what about a werewolf? Do you know what it takes to kill them?"

Aoric hesitated. "Silver?" He guessed.

"Correct. And blood. Human blood." Ruby's smile widened. "Accursed human blood, to be precise. Dip a silver blade in accursed blood, and even the most powerful werewolf will fall beside you. But aside from that, nothing can kill them." She tilted her head. "Well, moon sickness can, but that's a different story."

Aoric pressed his palm against his forehead. "What exactly is accursed blood? What makes it accursed?" He asked. Why was a specific lineage so important?

"Hmmm…" Ruby pondered a while. "How to put it…?" She fiddled with her crimson dress before her eyes glimmered. "Ah. I know." She smiled. "In the ages past, before Vesporum was a city, the Old Gods were much more present. They stayed out of sight, because just the sight of them would be enough to drive a human insane, but they were here."

She tapped on Aoric's arm. "They lent their power to certain families who proved themselves. But to do that, they needed to reveal themselves to those people. And so, they did. The people changed, they slowly became paranoid, until eventually they lost their minds. Their offsprings however, inherited this borrowed power." She pressed her finger on his skin.

"They were called the accursed by the common folk. They called themselves 'the Blessed', and we called them delicious. Their blood nourished us vampires. They gave us the power we longed for. And the Old Gods let us. So, we fed on them, and let them live the lives they wanted." She tilted her finger downwards, and her nail began pressing into his skin.

"Then, the werewolves came. They came from afar, and they were hostile. Yet we were strong, stronger than before, because we had the accursed blood to feed on, which quickly proved to be their one and only weakness." She smiled. " A Vampire feeding on accursed blood can kill a werewolf with ease, but so can a human who wields a silver knife soaked in accursed blood."

She pressed down even harder, and his skin finally broke, letting a drop of blood flow. Aoric flinched, and quickly pulled his arm away. "What are you doing?" he exclaimed.

Ruby smiled. She tilted her had as she raised her finger before her eyes. She looked at the drop of blood, then licked it.

"Your blood is delicious."
