We Do Not Need A Goddess

She didn't reply as she thought about what he just said. It made sense… but! Talking first then fighting if needed was what she believed! Coming to terms with her belief, she turned to see Bruin staring at her. His blue eyes did not look away even after she had turned to look elsewhere.

She blinked and blinked, but the man didn't move, only stared.

Time was ticking away and she was starting to feel awkward when the man didn't even blink. She leaned forward, waving her hands before him and he finally blinked. As if realizing what happened, Bruin quickly turned away and coughed into his hand. She watched as his cheeks and ears flushed. Her heart fluttered with the thought that maybe, just maybe Sir Bruin Huffman could work!

"I'll be returning to my post. You should return to what you were doing. The ball will be in a couple days."

"I see…" the Moon Goddess paused for a moment, "May I accompany you until then?"

"What?" He narrowed his eyes suspiciously, "You wish to follow me?"

"I have nothing to do," she paused, "Well, I do, but that would require my leave. If all goes well, I can stay longer once I earn your trust."

Bruin really should not have watched Moon when she entered the city to when he stepped in. What if this woman was like the others, wishing to cling onto him for marriage? Bruin was not the type to have flings, short romances, or any relationship if it was not for the betterment of his city. Was it better to have her with him so he can keep and eye on her or was it better to let her do whatever?

He watched the female reached for the dagger and touched the etching of the Moon Goddess's symbol. There was a lost look, one that was not quite looking at the blade. He saw long smooth fingers ran over the sharpness of the blade, before pausing at the tip.

"This was a ceremonial blade," Moon stated softly and he caught the solemn tone, "The people once offered blood in exchange for power, but they received none. It made things worse and it was not just their blood they offered. That is why a protector was needed, an alpha to protect the world."

"How do you know this?" Bruin questioned asking for the blade with his hand. She placed it in his as she answered him.

"I have seen it happened. So much tragedy," she paused and placed her hand on his holding the blade, "There are no protector in these times. Do you not see why they are needed now?"

He searched her face for a moment, thinking about what was just said. Do they need protectors, the Moon Goddess's chosen alphas? They have lived so long without her assistance, so why would she step in now when the lands and the people were fine?

"No. Every city has warriors to protect the people and there are no issues that the guards are unable to handle. What happens in one city is that leader's problem. This is how things are."

Purple eyes stared at him and there was a slight hesitancy, a bit widening of her eyes, before she looked away. He heard the deep sigh and saw her shoulders slouched.

"Then you feel the Moon Goddess is not needed any longer."

"That is not what I said," he reached for a black strand of her hair. Soft. He thought it would be.

"She no longer has purpose then," Moon whispered and he sighed.

"She may do as she wish, but her involvement with the people of Nevrisea is unneeded. We can take care of ourselves now. We do not need a Goddess to protect us."

"You say this, but you have not seen the children forced to work, pulled from their families, made to work in fields and if they do not do so, they would get beaten. You have not seen elders working tireless under the heat of the sun. You do not know the despair these people feel, Sir Bruin. You live nicely in the city of Springcall. Of course, you would say the Moon Goddess is not needed."

She shut her eyes and turned away from him. She had to get used to this. The people of Nevrisea did not understand what had become of it, but she did. They may think everything was fine, that people were living well and this was how it was to be. No. No it wasn't.

She would bring back peace as it once was. She did not need their thanks. All she needed were her alphas, her chosen. As long as those she marked were loyal to her, devoted to her, then she would be able to manage. She did not need an abundance of her power back. She just needed enough.

Just enough.

"You must be from Rosemount," his voice was accusatory, harsh against the back of her ear. She was being pushed and banged against the wall.

"Agh," she sounded but he pressed to her, lips to her ear so she had no were else to turn to but to hear him.

"Do you see me so lowly? You think I am an idiot that I do not know what is happening around the world?! Of course I know!"

His body pressed against her, flattening her body against the wall. She winced because her hands were trapped against her hips. Pulling them out, she barely heaved a sigh of relief when Bruin grabbed her wrists to press against the wall as well.

"What had Rosemount's leader sent you for? Was it to seduce me? Gain information? Tell me!"

"Sir Bruin! Let me go," she tried to pull away but he laughed removing one hand to land on her thigh.

"I won't lie. She is certainly smart in sending someone like you, but I will not let you near my leader nor any of my guards," Bruin stated with a coldness that sent the back of her hairs to stand.

"I do not know what you are speaking of! Please, let me go."

'She will not ruin Springcall. I'll make this girl scared so she leaves,' he told himself and gritted his teeth as he followed what his fellow comrades had done before.

Fingers glided up her thigh, pulling up her dress, and her eyes widened. They slipped under, feeling her smooth thigh up to her hip before moving back down.

"If this is what you are willing to do, then so be it."
