A Drive Through A Desolate Land

Earlier…

Eve climbed up the cable and made her way to the first floor. When she reached the opening to the first floor, she quickly scanned the area looking for any human heat signatures to make sure the two were indeed alone. When she was sure that no one was around, she pulled herself up onto the first floor and let Lilly down. "Are you okay?"

"Huh? Yes… Eve… Thank you… If you were not here I..." Lilly shivered, just thinking what would have happened. If she got caught by those two, her life would have been over.

"No need to thank me as it was I who had brought you here in the first place. If it was any other day, you probably would have been perfectly fine. Plus, the loader sticks out as well, so having it backed up to the building was a dead giveaway that someone was in here." Eve replied as she stood up. She reached out with her good arm and patted Lilly's head. "I said before I would protect you, and I will keep to my word. If you are scared, just hide behind my back. Well, what's left of it anyway."

Lilly couldn't hide the smile on her face as she heard Eve's words. Just hearing Eve joke at a time like this lifted her spirits a bit. "Mm… I will be sure to stay behind you if I am scared."

"Alright! Then princess, give me a second to unhook this so you can reel it in. " Eve teased as she undid the loaders hook from the cable. Once she did, she tossed the cable down into the elevator shaft. She was not worried about getting down since she could always bring a strong cable with her next time to climb down with.

The two went outside and saw the truck parked in front of the loader. The two looked at each other and grinned. "It seems we got something extra to bring back!"

"Yes, it does! And it seems to be in halfway decent shape, unlike this hunk of junk. If I create a pulley system, I can use it as my own personal loader!" Lilly was excited. Vehicles in X-Cyber City were really expensive, so to have one land in her lap made all the scary things well worth it.

"I will help you repair it and fix it up so you can use it later, once I have repaired my own body." Eve offered. She would also need to use it as well later to build better weapon systems for her body. She realized waiting on shop points to get items would take too long. She decided to not be too dependent on it and try to modify everything she could with her own creations. This would also allow her to understand her own body better too. She was not considered a genius in her past life for no reason.

"Thanks, Eve!" Lilly smiled brightly as she looked the truck over. Once she did, she quickly reeled in the loader hook and got the loader turned around so she could tow the truck. With the help of Eve, she was able to get the gravity engines hotwired and up and running so that it could be easily pulled along.

Lilly drove as Eve rode in the passenger seat. She would not need to climb into the back until much later. She was highly enjoying watching the scenery fly by as she drove down the desolate road.

"When we get back, I will back the truck into my warehouse where you can get off. I live in the basement, while the top part is a small warehouse where I store all my parts. I build things and then sell them to people. It is how I make enough credits to get by. You can enter my living space from the warehouse so no one will see you." Lilly explained.

"Are you sure you are willing to allow an A.I. you just met live with you? Are you not worried that I might turn on you and kill you?" Eve asked. She wondered just why Lilly was so trustworthy.

"Yeah, it's fine. I mean, if you kill me, that is on me, right? It's not like I am seeking death, but I think you need me as much as I need you." Lilly replied. She did not put much thought into her words as she was driving, but when she realized what she said, she blushed. It was true that Tezz could have a certain amount of conversation, but it was nothing like Eve. Eve had real emotion in her voice, real concern. This was something that Lilly had lacked in her life. And subconsciously, she craved for this kind of affection. She did not want to be around people who hated A.I., so her trust in Eve was in her hope that she was right when she says that not all A.I. are bad and out to kill humans. While she has heard of a place where humans and A.I. live in peace, to her, it was all a fairy tale. She was born and survived growing up in X-Cyber City. A place where A.I. was limited to a certain intelligence and nothing more.

Eve looked over at the blushing girl and found her to be very cute to the point she wanted to squeeze her cheeks. "Aiu! I think I might become attached to this cute human!"

"Eve, you are sounding more and more robotic every day. Don't forget that you used to be human. But I have changed my impression of her. She does seem genuine in wanting to help you. So I no longer have any misgivings about her being around us. You could tell her that you are her idol. She will probably worship you and wait on you hand and foot." Aui suggested.

"Nah. I would rather not bring in my past self. What is the point? I don't want someone to worship me. If I am going to team up with Lilly from now on, it would be best if we were on even ground. I am me, and she is her. What would be the point in telling her who I really am? I see no reason for it." Eve replied. She did not want to be worshiped. She just wanted to upgrade her body to its fullest potential and live out her immortal life as she pleased.

"I guess you have a point."
