Finally, after what felt like forever, according to Mara. We were finally able to go to my side job together. Of course, it has only been a few days since she was offered to go with me.
She must have gotten really tired of my precautions and instructions I was giving her though. It was something I wouldn't normally do, too many rules have not really interested me either. As Mara put it "I think I've only seen you act this strict in my nightmares."
So yea bottom line I was taking this seriously. My job was, most likely, not legal and I've been trying to keep it as unknown as possible. Which by the way was something I thought would be a problem with the people I would sell them to.
At this point, there must be countless people that know of me, my spot, and what I'm doing. Yet none of them have told a single guard. There must be some type of division going on for this place to stay open as long as it has.
This is why I don't want to break this lucky streak.
We both walk into the library and walk past the old man at the counter. As we walk by I hand him something and he takes it before it even leaves my hand making no note it was even there.
We then move to the back of the store. There were many hidden rooms in this library which makes me question its legitimacy but anyway the room I had used the day prior was gone, replaced with a bookshelf.
Going down another hallway that wasn't there the day before reveals a door. Opening it shows a dark wooden room with a table and two chairs.
According to my plan, Mara will only stand behind me making sure she doesn't say anything.
Taking a deep breath I make sure I have everything ready. Slime gems, hood on, and Mara of course. Ok well, I guess I'm ready. Mara already knows what's going on so all I have to do now is wait.
Hmm. Well, here I am again it would seem. Honestly, he must be doing it subconsciously at this point. What an absolute child he can't even muster the bravery to talk to people. What an interesting way to use a god skill I suppose.
Well at the very least I will still do my job no matter how… perplexing I find him to be. Of course, the door opens to reveal a common citizen from the town and quickly a deal happens and concludes just like the many ones I've done.
It's a tedious task but I do make sure that I don't let my guard down even because of that. Making sure I keep up this character for Akari is very vital as long as he wants this job to persist.
This character as I've put it is simply a threatening scary businessman.
It's either they may die from the ax of execution or they and their family will die a brutal and long death. It's fighting fire with fire but in my position there isn't extensively more I can do.
It's an act I'm quite good at to the point I can do it subconsciously. But that's the problem. For some reason, I can't do that. A feeling that something off simply won't go away.
Even after many people come and go I still can't tell what it is. It's impossible for there to be someone watching me but I can't help but feel like I'm mistaken.
It's coming from a person with no aggression or resolve to kill me. Yet that's not the problem, the problem is the lack of fear they have of me. If the glare is in fact there they have had only little burst of fear but the level of it I can only compare to a slight shock.
This is very concerning. It's conceivable that there's a third party somewhere. Maybe they are using a surveillance spell, if so that's very concerning. It's possible there's a magic device somewhere to spy and find my location and if that's true…
Hmm, I must find and destroy this device quickly.
"Hah, I'll mock him for his stupidity," I say leaning back in my chair.
"Uhh, Akari?"
I turn around. The only thing I see is an outline of a person. For more information I quickly use appraisal.
Strength 35~55 + 2
Speed 40~60 + 2
Defense 30~50 + 2
Intelligence 20~40 + 2
A very simple appraisal but still a useful one. I was finally off edge once I read it was Mara. Akari must have decided to take her with him for whatever reseen. I'm also pretty sure I read she had indirect Persistence which basically gets rid of any of my fears.
Whatever. I'll just let Akari deal with her. No reason I should bother myself.
"Wow it really did feel like you were a new person, it was kinda scary some of the time."
Heh, I guess she can babble on all she wasn't. Just let me concentrate.
"I mean if you can act like that I see no reason for you to hide so much, just tell whoever you want off and if they don't force em."
Yup, sure whatever you say.
"And of course, I would be right by your side killing anyone that got in your way."
???
Is this chick ok?
"Well I guess compared to you I wouldn't need to do anything. You could easily kill any person that tried to stop you."
Ok, that's enough. Im going to settle this before Akari fucks this up.
"No, no, and no. You can stop right there. First of all, I'm not even Akari, and second, what you just said is not only crazy but totally opposing what Akari wants."
"Wha you're not Akari?"
"No, I'm not, Red eyes see?" I say as I point at my crimson-colored eyes. "It's a good thing I wasn't Akari, could you imagine his reaction to that?
"Wha?"
"I mean come on he can barely kill a mob without being a baby over it. Talking about straight-up murder would make him terrified of you."
"It would?"
"Absolutely. You need to make sure you get that crazy idea out of your head and others like it. Maybe actually get to know him before spouting a crazy idea like that, my divine."
"I see…"
"Good, now if you would excuse me Akari will be back any second. My apologies, the situation wasn't explained beforehand between him and I."
Finally, I get the peace and quiet I wanted and am able to start returning. But just before I finish I hear Mara speak.
"Who are you?"
Just as I finish I respond.
"Persistence."
