Out of frustration Sam finally spoke and hoped that if this person got the conversation he was after he would leave sooner. Sam didn't know exactly what to say so he said the first thing that came to his mind,
“Where were you born?”
Connor was a very energetic and lively person for an 18 year old but almost immediately his face drained of all its color and filled with sadness.
“My parents died four years ago so when I turned eighteen I moved out of my Aunt’s and started living on my own."
The once happy and somewhat childish Connor had disappeared and was replaced by the gloomy one who sat before him now. Sam could see that it hurt him to remember the past but what did he care he was going to do worse in a matter of a few days because what Sam had planned for him was going to pain him so much more that it pained him to talk about his past.
Once again Sam had started to day dream about all the ways in which he could eliminate Connor but was quickly taken out of his trance by someone aggressively tapping him on his shoulder. He reached for his Beretta but quickly stopped when he saw who it was, it was Connor. He had been doing that a lot lately, getting lost in his thoughts and completely zoning out from reality.
The cafeteria was filled with slight chatter here and there but nothing major that was until someone called out his name, ‘Bolton’. Sam was confused and kind of shocked because he thought that the person was calling him but he realized that he was talking to Connor and not him. It still struck a nerve every time someone called Connor by his last name that was coincidentally Sam’s last name too. He assumed that the person calling him was one of his best friends considering the fact at how loud he was and the smile that made its way onto Connor’s face,
“Long time Connor.”
The person spoke.
“Yes it has. I thought you forgot about me.”
This time it was Connor who spoke and had a huge smile plastered on his face. Sam started to wonder how it was possible for people to be so happy. ‘Friends will not always be there but family is’, just then Sam was taken back to that memory. That memory that allowed him to return back to the past where everything was perfect.
“Friends will not always be there but family always is.” Sam could sense fear in his voice, he could sense sadness and despair the three things when put together could kill a living being. “Dad why do you sound so scared?” Sam spoke, hoping to get an answer. “Sam Connor……”
Just then the bell rang bringing him back to reality. It was like the world was protecting him from his past. It was like it knew that if he went to deep he would reach at a point of no return where he could never resurface. He wished that for once the world would take his side and just let him finish the flash back so he could get it over with but at the same time he was glad because he was scared that if he finished the flash back it would bring up emotions that would eat him alive.
Sam had now concluded that the boy in the flashback was his brother and his name was ‘Connor’. He thought that the memory was probably one of him and his brother but why now. He only started to get these flash backs when he met……Connor. He didn’t let himself think that the Connor he knew, the same one he was meant to assassinate, was his brother, the same brother that died many, many years ago. He was thinking of confronting Connor to ask him some questions to get the truth out of him but realized two things; one, that he couldn’t do that and jeopardize the mission and two, he could ask someone else, someone who would surely give him the answers he was looking for……Michael.
