Chapter 7 - New job

Adelina's pov:

The days in the hospital passed really quick but also very pleasant with Alex running every test he knew and always managed to make me laugh. Unfortunately, he didn't manage to found out why I still had anemia although I was a werewolf. Maybe we will never find out. I was discharged from the hospital and returned to my dull room. The first week I tried very hard to follow Maximus' rules due to the fact that my body was in recuperation. But as the week passed and I began feeling well and healthy again, staying in my room proved to be a very difficult task for me. I hadn't seen Maximus since the day that came to the hospital. I cannot understand him. If he already had chosen a woman for his Luna why did he bring me here? What was the reason that forced him to reveal that we were mates that day in my pack? If he hadn't said anything then, nobody would probably ever find out. It's crystal clear from the way he behaves to me that I am a burden, an unwanted, an outcast. So why he doesn't let me go back to my pack? No one knows that we are mates. What forces him to keep me here?

My thoughts were interrupted by a knock in the door. Probably is one of the omegas bringing me lunch. Oh my Goddess I am really bored to death here. Am I even bored to eat. That's a new one!

-"Adelina? May I enter ?It's me Alex" Alex's familiar voice echoed from the other side of the door. How much I like his company. Ηe is the only sunbeam in my so dark and monotonous life.

-"Alex of course come in!" I responded.

-"How is my favorite patient today?" he teased me.

-"I am not a patient anymore. On second thoughts maybe I am...... a patient of absolute boredom". He laughed at my comment and went on.

-"Oh please don't grumble about that.. Look at me.... I don't have free time at all. I am always very busy".

-" I thought that was your excuse for the annoying ladies.....Don't play this card to your friends".

-"Don't mock me. I am serious. Except from my obligations as a doctor, I was forced to take over the administrative part of the hospital by our dearest, the Alpha. The previous administrator found his mate and left us. So until the hospital finds a new one, I have to do the job and really I can't take it anymore. Besides I know nothing about it. I am really in great despair".

-"Would you like some help?"

-" What kind of help? From whom?"

-"Eeeee do you see anyone else in the room? For me you silly".

-"From you? he said derogatorily.

- "Yes from me. Why are you so demeaning? In my old pack I was the financial manager and second in command after the Alpha, who was also my brother".

-"That's the reason....hm" he said mockingly.

-"Stop joking and consider it"

-"I don't have to consider anything. I want to get rid of it. If you can you start tomorrow morning! I am going to talk to the Hospital Manager right away"

-"Yes, I would love that. And I am going to speak with the Alpha. I hope I will convince him."

-"If you want I will accompany you".

-"Υes, I would love that".

-"Let's go then. The sooner the better" Alex told me with enthusiasm.

We got out of the room and headed to Maximus' office. Alex knocked the door and when we were allowed to enter he let me go first. As always the red headed, Jina was in the usual position, hooked all over Maximus. Anyway, I didn't let my sadness and disappointment take over and holding my head high I started talking.

- "Alpha, I would like to discuss a very important matter with you if you may".

-"Tell me".

-"It's private".

-"You can speak freely. I do not have secrets from Jina".

-"Oh I see ...anyway I had a job offer and I want to take it. I want to work".

-"Work? What are you capable of?" he asked me in a derogatory way.

-"Maybe she can take the position of this omega who worked in the kitchen and left last week when she met her mate, love" the intolerable red headed mentioned.

- No, she won't work in the kitchen but in the hospital" Alex interrupted clearly very annoyed.

- "I wasn't aware that there was a vacancy in the cleaning section" Jina interrupted again.

- "Really what's your problem with the cleaning personnel? Why are you so demeaning? It's a job like all the others. It's responsible, hard and decent. If there weren't those people you would probably stink" I talked back to her.

-"Ι do not want a lecture from an old alpha's brat even of a not so powerful pack" she derided.

-"And what do you know about me? At least in my family we learned to respect the others and have principles. Unknown concept to you" I scolded.

-"How dare you bitch?" she was ready to attack me like a tiger but I didn't fear her at all. I came with a cause and I am going to fulfill it whatever cost.

-"Shut your mouth for once and try to be more respective. Ok?" I told her putting her in her place.

-"Or else what?" she approached me in a menacing way.

-"Stop it! " Maximus intervened.

-"Yes my love, she should learn her position".

-"Both of you Jina. Shut the fuck up. You drive me crazy." Maximus put his hair behind and continued after a big sigh. "And what job are you going to do?"

-"Actually I will work in the administration of the hospital", I answered.

-What are those nonsense? With what qualifications are you going to do that?" Jina asked.

-"Please, can you just stop interfering?" I scolded her.

-"How dare you, you filthy minion? " she told me as she came closer to me. I ignored her and continued

-"Alpha as you are aware of, I have a degree in economics and also I was working as a financial advisor of the Alpha in my old pack. So, I believe I am more than qualified for the position of the administration".

Maximus didn't talk. He sat motionless like a statue staring at me in a way that he gave me the impression that something was bothering him. He still remains an enigma to me. Bond and b...shit. I can't feel any emotion or thought of him and I believe he can't either. There is no connection between us. We are absolutely strangers.

-"So Alpha what is your opinion?" I insisted.

After some minutes, Maximus cleared his throat and said

- "I will not object, only under one condition".

-"Which is?" I asked.

-"You will work without getting paid".

-"That's preposterous! How will I be able to support myself if I don't get paid?"

-"You don't need any money. You live here in the pack house, so you don't have rent or food expenses. And as for your personal expenses, those will be covered by me" Maximus answered smugly.

And those last words made Jina furious and left me more confused than ever. Why is he willing to pay my personal expenses when he doesn't give a damn about me?

-"What? Why?" Jina asked him in annoyance. Actually she was fuming..

-"I am sorry but I do not accept those terms" I told back.

-"Me neither", Alex intervened and we all remained speechless staring at him. Never the less, he continued undaunted "Alpha if the problem is financial I offer the half of my salary to Adelina".

-"You what?" Maximus and I said together. And then Maximus continued "Why would you do that? What's the connection between you and her?"

And before Alex had the chance to respond I interfered.

- "I am sorry Alex I cannot accept this".

This man always manages to surprise me! He is such a good person. Kind, selfless, funny, generous, supportive, good looking. Oh Goddess why couldn't be Alex my mate?

And with those thoughts Maximus stood up abruptly and said

-"You will work to the administration of the hospital and your salary will be the same with the previous' one. Now everyone leave my office immediately!" he began yelling.

Even the red headed was scared by his sudden attitude. What's the matter with him? Maybe he is a bipolar, who knows. Thank Goddess that the bond thing isn't working. I do not want a neurotic for my mate! Nevertheless, today it's the first day after so many days here that I feel really happy and optimistic. I won't rot in a bedroom all day. I will have my job. I will have a cause in my life. I will be productive again. I like working. Keeps my mind calm and I am not thinking unpleasant things such as my insensitive mate and his intolerable mistress.
