Chapter 141: Garth

Garth CIRCLED THE TRUCK to Noemi's door, thankful for the dark shadows. Their dinner conversation hadn't veered off the serious path once. The easy way they'd had on vacation was gone. Maybe it was the week or just how they were wired deep down. It hadn't been bad. All of it was stuff they needed to say to each other. Deep down he was glad to have it all out of the way. But it didn't exactly set the mood for much to happen after.

He pulled the door open and Noemi turned, her legs dangling off the side of the seat. Her eyes were heavy lidded.

"Help me down?" she asked.

"If you like."

He grasped her by the waist and lifted her off the seat.

She chuckled slightly as he set her on her feet. He'd almost call it a giggle.

Noemi leaned in, arms around his neck. "I forgot how strong you are."

"Comes with the job." He ducked his head and reached past her to shut the truck door.

"Hey?" The word was serious.
