Brenna about jumped out of her skin when she felt a hand on her shoulder. The blood in her head pounded and she felt tight bands around her chest. She waited for whatever was to come next. When Slaton spun her around, she thought for sure that she was done for.
“Sh. What’s wrong?” He reached up and cupped her face with his hands.
She answered in short gasps as she tried to calm herself down. “I saw shadows moving in the trees over there.” She motioned with her head where she had been looking a few minutes earlier. Her hands had a death grip on his shirt.
Slaton looked around and peered into the dark behind her. A slow smile crossed his face as his gaze penetrated the dark. “There’s nothing to fear. It’s the tribe on patrol.”
“What? You know those people in there?” She glanced at the woods and back at him with a surprised look on her face.
“Yep. They are just making sure there are no unusual scents or signs around our place.”
