It didn’t take long for the food to be reheated, nor for Slaton to appear. It was as though he knew it was time, even though Tahnee didn’t say a word. He entered the kitchen slowly and tried to apprise himself of the situation.
His mother’s voice rung in his head. “She is accepting things, but be understanding of the shock she has experienced.”
“I will. I promise.”
“Don’t pressure her. Just answer her questions truthfully. Don’t hold back anymore. Be completely honest.”
Slaton nodded as he took the seat across from Brenna. She kept her eyes on her plate and played with her food. It wasn’t until Tahnee left the room that she acknowledged him being there.
“So, you were the one who really saved me in the woods when he kidnapped me, right?”
Slaton ignored the plate in front of him and focused on her bowed head. He didn’t like the tension between them at all and wanted the air cleared so they would be comfortable with each other again.
“Yes. It was me and the rest of the men.”
