Evil Promises

The campsite was almost as good as the one the night before. There was a natural shelter as well as fresh water. Miakoda had a fire ready to start which Slaton did quickly while the young girl took care of the horse. Layford found two large rabbits they promptly prepared to place over the fire. Brenna couldn’t remember having a better tasting meal. They had only been gone three days, but it felt longer. She felt the grime of the travel and longed for a bath. She knew they couldn’t stop to enjoy such luxuries until they were safe in the cave system. Bathing would have to wait.

She licked the juices of the meat off her fingers and settled back against a rock that she could use as a backrest. It felt so good. Her bottom ached from riding the horse which she had not done in years. Placing her hands over her stomach, she hoped the baby was faring well. They still had a few more days to go. If the baby could survive Jolon’s attempted murder, then he could stand a few more days on a horse.
