Time to Go

Slaton followed the distant shimmering deep into the mountain. Gradually he realized that he was descending into it. His feet felt the angle of the floor change periodically. It wasn’t sudden or severe, and anyone else might not have been aware. But his senses were heightened more than ever. He became aware of this change as he moved further down the tunnel’s path.

He could hear noises that went beyond his typical wolf hearing. Sounds of dripping water reached his ears, but he could tell they were far away. A few times he picked up the sound of birds on the mountain sides.
