As I walked into class, a strange sensation came over me. Everything just felt so unfamiliar. After a few seconds, I realized why.
It was because I showed up a little early, as opposed to just barely on time or late.
Most of the seats in the class were taken, especially so for the back. There was a fairly large group of people talking to each other loudly as they waited for class to start. As I walked over to my seat, I noticed that Monika was already there.
She noticed me once I walked in.
Monika smiled gently and waved.
"Hi, Sayori~"
I raised my shoulders and scrunched up in embarrassment. The aftereffects of hugging Natsuki so passionately in public still affected me.
"H-Hi Monika."
I took a seat next to her and pulled out my philosophy textbook. As I set it down on the table, I couldn't help but feel Monika's stare, even though I wasn't looking at her directly.
Monika had an elbow on the table and a hand supporting her chin.
"Thank you for working so hard on those parchment designs. I was quite surprised, they were far cuter than I expected."
A faint blush formed on my cheeks as I lightly pressed the tips of my fingers together.
"Ah, sorry for making them too cutesy."
Monika's eyes narrowed into thin little arcs as she giggled.
"No, no, I liked them a lot. If it was me, I would never be able to come up with something like that."
I pressed my lips together, unsure if I should take it as a compliment or an insult.
"O-Oh."
Monika opened her mouth, about to say something else, but was cut off by the teacher. She winked before whispering to me.
"We should pay attention in class, but there will be plenty of time for us to talk later."
I nodded and gave a thumbs up.
With that, we both listened to the teacher's lecture.
The soft sounds of chalk tapping filled the room. At some point, I lost interest and began looking around the room. On the left, was someone working studiously, looking up at the chalkboard intently.
After letting out a soft sigh, I looked to the right.
And noticed that Monika was staring at me. She smiled sweetly once I looked at her.
I blinked a few times, not knowing how to respond.
Monika looked back towards the front, prompting me to do the same.
I tried my best to focus on the lesson, but it was simply too hard for me. For some reason, within the first ten minutes, I suddenly lose all of my motivation. It was like my mind suddenly plunged into a pool of molasses, unwilling to do anything anymore.
I ended up looking around the room once more.
And when my eyes ended up on Monika, she was also looking at me. Once again, she smiled before turning to the front, as though nothing was wrong.
I felt a little embarrassed.
Monika caught me slacking again...
Gosh...
I have to pay attention! This time, I really will listen to the words the teacher says and try to comprehend them!
Ok...
I didn't understand what the teacher just said, but I will continue listening anyway?
...What the heck does 'Affirming the consequent' mean?
The teacher tapped on the chalkboard.
"And that is the lesson for today! Use the rest of the period to get started on your homework!"
I pressed my lips together, trying my best not to start crying.
"Uu..."
"Do you want me to help you go over it?"
Monika rested her head on her hand and looked at me with a gentle smile. I awkwardly put my hand on the back of my head and tried to make a natural sounding laugh.
But I failed miserably.
"I would really benefit from that, sorry to bother you."
Monika laughed brightly, almost like she was lighting the room up.
"You already put so much work into the literature club and convinced me to stick with my passion. If anything, I owe you some tutoring at the very least."
I lightly pressed the tips of my fingers together.
"E-Eh? But I hardly did anything! Getting tutored by the top student is too much for me!"
Monika chuckled.
"Oh come on, it's not like I'm really doing that much anyway."
I placed one hand onto my cheek.
"But when you teach me I understand the toughest things so easily!"
Monika smiled sweetly.
"And when you came to encourage me yesterday, it felt like the sun shone down on me, pushing away the shadows of doubt."
My cheeks felt a little hot.
"Ah, I only said a few words though!"
Monika giggled.
"And so did I!"
She took a deep breath.
"We both put hardly any effort in, but it benefits the other so much. Isn't this just a mutually beneficial relationship?"
I opened my mouth to retort, as something about this logic felt wrong. Yet, nothing came to mind. In the end, I nodded.
"O-Ok."
Monika slid her desk over to mine, getting really close to me.
"Let's start then!"
She began flipping through the textbook pages while asking me a question.
"Was there anything that confused you in this lesson?"
An awkward giggle escaped me.
"Um... all of it."
Monika looked at me and blinked a few times.
"Er, really?"
I averted my gaze.
"Y-Yeah..."
Monika smiled bitterly.
"That's alright. Why don't we start off with logical forms? Do you understand this?"
I coughed.
"Um, no."
Monika nodded.
"Ok, let me try to do this in a way that isn't confusing."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"We use logical form to prove if a certain fact is true. For example, I want to prove that Sayori is adorable."
I immediately began blushing.
"E-Eh?"
Monika smiled sweetly.
"Do you have any questions?"
I blinked a few times.
"Um, no."
Monika nodded.
"Then I will continue. We use three sentences in logical form. The first one is a fact we already know. It might not be true, but we assume that it is for this situation."
She raised her index finger.
"For example, if Sayori is blushing, she is adorable. Notice it looks like if A then B."
I could feel my head heat up in embarrassment.
Why did Monika have to use my name? It makes everything so awkward!
Monika cleared her throat.
"Then we move onto the second sentence. This tells us if the first sentence is true for this situation. In other words, it either says A is true or A is false."
She smiled brightly.
"For example, Sayori is blushing! In other words, A is true."
I could feel the blood rush to my head even faster. It began heating up like a furnace. Though I couldn't see what I looked like right now, it was probably humiliating.
Monika tilted her head to the side.
"Then we come to the third and final sentence. This is our conclusion. It either confirms or denies. It will look like B is true or B is false."
She brought her face a bit closer and lowered her voice a little.
"For example, therefore, Sayori is adorable."
