Chapter 13

Mr. Thomas Blukett, first son of Lord Blukett and heir sat opposite the scowling Lord Blukett. Thomas was trying carefully to react in the way his angry father expected of him, but he was failing at it. He could not understand why his father expected him to be angry at the news that he had a daughter.

He had known that the maid he slept with those many years ago was with child. The maid had taken pains to make that all too obvious, and unless both mother and child had met with a fatal mishap, Thomas was all too aware he had a bastard. He had thought a few of the times about seeking her out, if only to know what his first child looked like, but he had not wanted her to misunderstand his intentions and start professing her love – again.

He was also afraid that his father, Lord Blukett would be furious if he sought out the troublesome maid again, so Thomas kept to himself.

Now, his father sat opposite him, telling him his first child lived, who from what had been said about her was comely to the eyes, and that her troublesome mother, his former maid was dead. Thomas's heart sang with joy.

"You are not listening to what I am saying" Lord Blukett continued angrily. "Gareth wants to give this bastard of yours to the Alpha as a plaything. He says it would make him decide not to destroy us after all, but I think this is Gareth hatching a scheme up that sleeve of his, and I'll be damned if I let any form of disgrace befall the good name of this family. I think—" Lord Blukett paused a bit as his eyes narrowed slightly. "I think that we ought to kill her."

Thomas was shocked. "But you cannot do that Father. What good would it do us to could it possibly do us to kill our own blood. For Mercy's sake, she is your grandchild. Have you no human feeling?" A sudden uneasy realization dawned on him. "Would you propose so coldly then to kill me if I had been base born?"

"There is no need to get hysterical like a woman." Lord Blukett snapped. "Unfortunately, I cannot so easily rid myself of you. Idiot, you are my heir. Have you no ambition at all? Does national politics mean nothing to you?"

Thomas was silent for a while, and when he spoke again, he did so carefully. "I think we can find a better way to handle this situation. We are not even sure Gareth is plotting anything. For all we know, he could be genuinely trying to save Shezlam from an attack by the Alpha."

"Talking with you," Blukett said getting up and steadying his hat on his head. "It's a total waste of time." He walked out of the country house he had given his son, and into his carriage. Leaving the you get Blukett worried about the safety of his daughter.
