Sara raised the apron and wiped her forehead. The heat of the oven was intense despite the bitter cold outside. It was a white Christmas.
The smell of the roast filled the room along with that of sweet potatoes baking with brown sugar on top. Sara set the mixer aside as she finished mixing the coconut pie filling. Mary worked alongside her preparing the feast. Lilly sat the table with Leslie.
“Mom, are you okay?” Mary asked as she helped her mother get the roast out of the oven.
“Yes. Why?” Sara lifted the lid on the roaster and checked the roast and root vegetables inside.
“You seem tired.”
Sara laughed. “Of course, I’m tired. When am I not?” She paused at Mary’s concerned look. “Don’t worry about it. Let’s finish getting the meal together.”
