Dad!

Clearing her throat, Jessica ignored the guilty feeling nagging at her gut and faced Laura with a smile. "It's alright. Aren't I also like a daughter to you? A daughter is meant to do things like this for her mother. Right mother?"

Laura's green eyes shook. Ever since the death of her son and daughter-in-law, she had come to terms with the fact that she was childless. It was a bit tough to swallow down but she had to conform to it either way.

And the sooner it was the better.

But Jessica's words struck a chord within her as she felt her eyes sting. No one had ever called her 'mother' in a long while. It felt bittersweet.

She sniffed and managed to squeeze out an 'alright', leaving Jessica with the vegetables and proceeding to stuff the chicken.
