As he walked away from the village, Lanis thought about how he should approach this mission. The wolves he was hunting were said to be ordinary monsters, however there was said to be a giant silver alpha that was very close to turning into a class one beast.
Lanis had learned that monsters in this world are sorted into more generalized "classes". Beasts in this world did not have mana cores, instead they developed beasts cores that grew naturally as they ate other beasts or mages. Class one was a beast that just developed a beast core, a class 1 beast had a class 1 core. Lanis had also learned that a Class one beast was comparable to a hollow core mage, but a rank 1 mage would always lose to a beast that had just developed a core so the comparison was mostly for higher ranks. This trend continued as the classes went up for example a class two beast was comparable to a Bronze stage, but once again the fight was unfair for a rank 1 bronze mage.
Lanis knew that the alpha may be hard to kill but since it hadn't actually became a class one he knew he still had a chance especially if he could get a good skill from the wolves in the pack before fighting the alpha.
First, he would look for lone wolves or weak groups of wolves to get and skills they had then he would either work on improving his mana core or would go straight to hunting the alpha.
The mission did not state that killing the alpha was necessary however there would be an extra reward if its silver hide was brought back.
Lanis continued down the road a way as he knew that wolves wouldn't hunt so close to the village since they could sense the more powerful people guarding and living inside.
While thinking of how the guards knew his mana core level the second he walked up to the gate, paying more attention to those around him. He found that as long as he was trying to sense the mana around him, he could pick up on most of the traveler's strength.
Since some of the travelers didn't have any mana, Lanis picked up on the fact that most of them were just ordinary people who hadn't formed a mana core, but from the intimidating aura some of them had he guessed they were just hiding their level and Lanis had no idea how to see how powerful they really were.
After a day of traveling down the road, Lanis decided to start venturing into the woods to find wolves. The first day of hunting was fruitless and he only found some slimes and deer. He made sure to cook and pack the deer meat in his backpack before moving on.
On the second night while Lanis was cooking meat he saw a pair of red eyes looking at him from the darkness. Lanis quickly drew his sword as he prepared to fight, he then noticed two more pairs surrounding him, at this point he had already identified these enemies as 3 ordinary wolves.
"I see so the prey comes to me themselves well thank you."
Irritated at Lanis' mockery, the wolves all charge him. Trying to break out of the encirclement Lanis charges towards the wolf directly in front of him. Right before clashing, he manages to side step the wolf and slashes deep into the wolf's flesh. The wolf howls in pain and flops down on the ground. The other two wolves charge at Lanis in anger after seeing one of their own hurt.
Lanis dodges one and uses his sword to block the other but the charge was stronger than he expected and it knocked him down, the wolf quickly jumped on top of him and Lanis was forced to hold him at bay using his sword.
As the first wolf was just now getting up, and the wolfs he just dodged was turning around, Lanis saw that he was in a tight spot.
'Damn I really didn't want to do this'
Lanis pushed the wolf off of him and held his hand above it heads.
'Adhesive secretion'
Lanis activated his ability and a big glob of gooey substance appeared in his palm. Lanis activated his ability multiple times as he quickly threw the sticky balls at the wolf who was trying to get off the ground.
The wolf was almost completely covered with adhesive and it found it very hard to move its body off of the ground.
Before the other wolves made their move Lanis took the spear from his back at threw it at the already wounded wolf.
< Chance to gain "Howl" from weaker opponent failed >
Lanis was upset that he didn't get the new skill but he didn't let it distract him from the fight. He turned to the last standing wolf and launched a throwing knife at it. Right as the wolf dodged the knife Lanis used dash to close the distance between the two.
The wolf was not ready for the sudden increase in speed and Lanis was able to slash its neck instantly killing it.
< Congratulation's 1 level of "Claw" has been gained>
Lanis looked at the screen briefly before turning to the last wolf that had just now managed to stand but it still struggled to lift it legs due to the adhesive at the bottom of its paws.
The wolf knew it couldn't beat Lanis so it decided to run. Lanis was not going to let it get away as he used dash once again and then decided to end the fight with his new ability.
'Claw'
Lanis felt his finger nails grow sharp and he felt power flow into his forearm as he clawed the wolf removing a huge chunk of its back.
< Chance to gain "Bite" from weaker opponent failed >
The wolf did not last even a minute after Lanis's attack.
"It seems like more advanced monsters have more than one skill to gain. I guess I am going to get more than just money while hunting this alpha."
Gaining new skills always filled Lanis with joy as he felt like he was becoming stronger. He smiled as he went back to the campfire and soon went to sleep ready to hunt more wolves the next day.
