On Wednesday morning, David comes to pick up Ellie and I for school like usual. As Ellie is walking out the door, David catches my arm to hold me back.
"Hey babe. Can we talk about yesterday?"
I sigh, but nod.
"I just… I was really worried about you."
"I know."
"I couldn't get a hold of you, even through the pack link."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"I just wish you wouldn't disappear like that."
"I know."
"I am more than happy to ditch practice after school to go on a run with you, if that's what you need."
"I know."
"So… uh… from now on, don't go on runs without me."
"Yeah, Mom told me the same thing. I promise I won't go anywhere without you ever again."
"Ok, cool. Good. That's good. Glad we could talk. I love you babe."
"I know."
"So, after practice today, I thought we could go on a date. It's been a few days since we've had any alone time."
"Yeah. Sure."
"Cool, cool. So, um… wait for me at the football field after school?"
"Sure."
During study hall, I look for Alastair in the practice rooms, but he isn't there. I wander the halls, trying to catch a whiff of him, but that also proves fruitless. I practically run to precalc. I anxiously wait for him to appear, my knees bobbing up and down in my seat. I begin to suspect he might not even be at school today, but then he slips into class just as the bell rings. He stands at the front of class, freezing in place when our eyes meet. I smile. He doesn't.
"Please take your seat, Mr. Malum," our teacher says. Alastair nods, hurrying to sit next to me, but he doesn't look my way. A curtain of hair separates us during the entire class and he doesn't so much as glance my way, even when I try to get his attention with notes and then pokes. He starts packing up his supplies before the final bell has even rung and rushes away as soon as it does. I think it is safe to say he is avoiding me.
After our talk in the field yesterday, I thought we were making progress. Guess not. I sigh, leaving class to head to the football field. Ellie is already sitting on the bleachers with some homework on her lap. Having retrieved my backpack from behind the school's dumpsters earlier this morning, I pull out my history textbook. I figure my mood can't get any lower, so I decide to start the assigned reading about the European's colonization of America. I'm sure at this point anything I read will slide right off my back like water on a duck.
It doesn't. Somehow, I still have the energy to get angry at my own ancestors' mistreatment of human Native Americans. Werewolves migrating from Europe were even worse than humans, thinking all this unmarked land in the New World was theirs to claim. It also didn't help their egos that some Native American tribes practically worshipped wolves. I just can't wait to read about how my ancestors burned Alastair's, forcing witches into hiding, even from other supernaturals, for centuries.
Football practice lasts for a couple hours and I secretly look forward to taking my own car to school next week after I get my driver's license. Then Ellie and I won't have to stick around waiting for David. None of the school buses go on pack territory, for obvious reasons. There has been talk of chartering our own bus to take all the school-aged children to and fro, but Alpha Edmund doesn't make any changes quickly.
He, like my parents and his wife, is very traditional. Why would anyone need a stranger to drive their kids to school when all the mothers in the pack live for the sole purpose of taking care of their children? Not that my mother can be bothered to pick Ellie and I up. Oh no, that would take away from quality time with my mate.
"Can't wait to be able to take the car to school next week. Then we won't have to wait around everyday for practice to end," I vocalize my thoughts to my sister.
"I don't know. I might stick around anyways. Unlike you, my dear brother, I actually enjoy watching football."
I scoff. "Seriously, Ellie?"
"Seriously. The guys are total beefcakes and ogling them every fifteen minutes makes for a very effective study break."
I laugh. "Are men all you ever think about?"
"Yes. Same as you."
"Ok, well we all know that's not true." Mostly not true.
"Right. You only ever think about one man." Accurate, but not for the reason she's thinking.
"Ellie… what if… what if David's not my mate?"
"Huh? Where did that come from?"
"I don't know. I've just been thinking about it lately. Like... what will everyone think? What will you think?"
"Hm… I've never really thought about it before. I guess I don't really care whether you're Luna or not. You'll still be you and you're pretty cool even without some fancy title."
I can't help but tear up at her words. I pull her into a fierce hug. "Thanks Ellie."
"I wouldn't worry about it too much though. Davy's been obsessed with you since we were toddlers. Unfortunately for the rest of us lowly omegas, that fine specimen is most likely yours for life." She sighs dreamily before going back to watch said specimen run the field with his fellow teammates.
