The moonless night is dark. It didn't help Me and Hal that under the thick cover of the forest's leaves even the starlight was neglectable. But it didn't mattered to us. As we moved through the forest the dozen of dark wolves followed us frantically, it was the survivors of the pack we have been hunting for the last two nights, slowly chipping their numbers few at a time. But it was the first time we had to face a dozen of them at the same time.
I felt small string of warm magic in his hand. It wouldn't be long until the wolves catch up to us, confrontation was unavoidable, I took a deep breath and let my own magic circulate through my body. I knew it's enough of a sign. Hal could feel it and understand me.
As if it was planned before hand we both stopped in our tracks and turned around. Hal found a big tree and stood with his back to the wide trunk, by no means was Hal considered small, but the trunk of that tree was much wider, effectively providing Hal the protection he needs. I smiled as I saw it and charged forward, back into the advancing dark wolves. My spear in hand, I lifted it and stabbed forward, the front dark wolf reached him jaw open, and while my spear hit the neck of the wolf behind him to the right, my left arm found it's place under the front wolf's neck, and pushed to the right.
The wolf crushed into the wolf that found itself to my left, as the claws of the first wolf cut my body I looked at the wolves in front of me. Their advance slowed significantly thanks to me blocking a wide line of their advance. Its good. Now their main attention will be on me.
As warm magic spread through the area where a new cut in my cloths appeared, the wound started closing. The wolves immediately started circling around me, I span my spear as three of them charged to me at the same time, I dived down towards the wolf to my right, the one which was already hit by the spear once, and stabbed into his eye while my left arm caught the leg of the next wolf that was charging at me form the front and pulled, escalating his speed making all three wolves collide.
As the wolf at the tip of my spear crushed to the ground, his head impaled by the spear I jumped forward, swinging my spear in in a circle I cut the two of the three wolves mildly, kicking another one, and finishing with my spear impaling a fourth through his mouth.
Two down. Ten to go. From that point it became harder. The remaining wolves around me didn't charge in as fast. They were more cautious. Lowering their stature they kept themselves near ground, where they can control their of their position. It will be impossible to use their momentum against them anymore.
Relying on their sharp teeth and claws they tried to Gnaw forward. It wasn't an elegant fight anymore, but more of an all out brawl. Avoiding their teeth, I entangled with at least three wolves at a time while their claws cut into his flesh. Kicking, Punching, and pushing the wolves with my spear as if it is a quarterstaff, I waited for an opportunity.
In the meanwhile Hal was dealing with four of the other wolves that decided to hunt him down. His fight was brutal from the start. Using the tree behind him as a cornerstone, he swung both his arms in wide movements, right arm using his staff, and left arm swinging the wolf that sunk it's teeth into his hand. Seeing the other three starting to back off from his frantic waving, he used the opportunity to slam the wolf on his left arm into the tree behind him, spine first.
A strong cracking sound was heard as the dark wolf's eyes went white. Using the opportunity the other three tried to charge forward again but were blocked by the flailing wolf again.
Meanwhile on my side, there were already a total of three bodies, the brawl continued for not very long, when only three of them were left around there were countless of wounds on his body. The deeper ones closed long ago, tens of dozens small cuts filled his body.
At this point it was brawl no more, there were no more wolves to fill in the void of the ones being pushed away by me to the side, creating a moment that I need to face only one at a time is easy. The sixth one fell down, seventh and eight followed quickly.
The warm magic kept treating my body nonstop throughout the fight. even when the fight ended it didn't stop. charging to the place where Hal was I found one wolf alive growling at Hal. Noticing me the wolf turned around, but it didn't help it much, as it found a spear through it's head.
I looked at Hal's direction, two dark wolf bodies under him had their skull smashed in, and another wolf dangling down his left hand.
I chuckled at the troubled Hal "Did his jaw lock on your arm upon it's death?", circulating magic through his arms I grabbed the lower and upper jaw and broke them apart, releasing Hal's hand.
"I told you we can manage more than ten" I continued while Hal just stared forward, I felt the warm magic leaving my body in protest, focusing on Hal's hand, closing the deep teeth wound that penetrated his hand down to the bone.
"I know, I know, you are dissatisfied, I promise, next time we will be more careful and do like previous pack, where we didn't need to fight more than eight a time, I guess this one was way to close." I continued, "How is your magic supply?"
The warm feeling spread up to my knees, then came back throughout my wounds and continued treating them. When it will be mostly done Hal's magic supply should be all gone. It was barely enough. This fight was too close, without Hal healing I wouldn't be able to fight like that, disregarding my safety as much.
I did cover my body as much as I could with my own magic, protecting it so the wounds wont cut too deep, but I guess it wasn't enough. I should focus my magic faster in areas that will be hit. I should not put as much burden on Hal.
Taking a deep breath a sighed and muttered "I guess its wolf stew again today" and then continued louder, so Hal can hear the other part "Lets go back to our camp and eat, we should rest."
