As soon as we were back in the privacy of our own home, I hugged Vivian as tightly as I could while being careful not to crush Charlie. Esmeralda saw this and tried to take Charlie, but Vivian wouldn't let him go.

"I had no you were in danger. The thought that I might have lost you...it's unbearable," I said hoarsely.

"When I thought I was about to die, all I wanted was to come home to you and Charlie," Vivian said. She blinked rapidly to hold back the tears.

I helped Vivian up the stairs and into bed. She laid down under the blankets while still refusing to let go of Charlie. I sat by her side and watched her until she fell asleep, then took our son and put him in the crib.
