chapter thirty

Two weeks passed in a blur. Maya heeded to my advice and tried her best to stay as far as possible from Xavier but he doesn't seem to understand that and I don't care anymore.

"Can you just hurry up,we are going to be late" I shouted and banged the door loudly at Maya that has being in the bathroom for over 10 hours now. Its actually thirty minutes but it felt like 10 hours.

"Just wait a minute" she shouted back and I groaned slopping down on the bed. After two more minutes, she came out of the bathroom and I didn't bother looking at her.

"Can't you at least look at me?" She said when she realised I wasn't paying attention to her. "No thanks" I replied bringing out my phone to annoy her more. "Girl,I have posed in this position for three minutes now,just look at me" she pleaded and I wasn't listening. "Plsss" she added. "Ok fin....." I started but can't continue when I turned and saw Maya.

She was dressed in a long red penciled gown which fitted her tightly and she was standing in an awkward position smiling tiredly. I didn't know when I fall off the bed laughing.

"What is funny now?" She said standing upright with her arms akimbo. "You do..don't see how you lo..look." I managed to say in between laughs and she walked furiously to the mirror. She looked at herself and she burst out laughing with me when she realised how awful she looked.

Her mascara was smudged making her looked like she cried black blood. Her lipstick was too much,way too much and it was totally out of the shape if her lips. Long story short,she looked awful and good for Halloween.

"You know you caused it" she stated when her laughter died down. "You were just on my neck telling me to hurry up and that" she added wiping her messed up face. "I wasn't on your neck,I was actually sitting on the bed" I said innocently.

"Well,get seated and let me fix your makeup"I said holding up the foundation and powder. She quickly snatched it from me saying"oh pls,I don't want to look a giraffe after you get my makeup done. So stay back and give me a minute" she started applying her makeup while I patiently wait for her to get done.

"Oh wow,this place looks yummy" I exclaimed as I take a good look at the not so fancy restaurant Maya drove us to. "Are you sure this us the address Stephanie sent you?" I questioned her just in case. "Hmm-" she hummed looking at her phone "yep,Its Fambrini's cafe" she stated looking up to the large nice sign hanged above the entrance of the cafe.

"Shall we?" She said pulling me out of my train of thoughts. I wasn't really even thinking of anything. I walked in side by side with Maya. I saw some familiar faces I knew from school and some I don't. Their heads snapped up to us,specifically Maya as the door clicked when we entered.

"Never should have worn this dress." She whispered to me and I bit back a laugh. "Told ya" I remarked making her glare at me very lowly. I told her not to wear that dress,its too tight and she looks like she's going to a special Valentine party but she said something like 'duhhh,its Stephanie's birthday. What the butt did you expect'.

"Hey you two" Xavier said as he approached us dressed nicely. "Hi" we said back to him. "Gosh Maya and Khair, you came" Stephanie chirped in as she speed walk towards us looking elegant in her purple gown. She hugged us both with a huge grin. "I never thought you could make it to here,especially you Khair" she blabbed and hugged us again.

"Stephanie but I'm surprised" I said out of nowhere as she led us to where our seats were. "About what?"

"You know today is your birthday and its falls on Sunday, aren't you suppose to go to the church and pray or something?" I questioned her in a matter of factly manner.

"Pfttt,Church, my ass" she made a disgusted face which made us laugh. We sat down and the waitress bought us something drinkable shortly.

"Uhm,so why celebrating your birthday in a restaurant?" Maya questioned and I pinched her under the table. She winced and looked at me shrugging. Stephanie noticed that and smiled at me. "Its nothing actually. Smith organized it for me and I like it" she replied with a smile and I thank God she wasn't annoyed.

"Where is Smith then?" I asked looking around. "I dunno" both Stephanie and Xavier said together. Few minutes later,someone announced through an invisible speaker that everyone should go to the cafe's veranda where the real event is going to take place.

Some people started ordering something to take to the veranda and I looked at the menu not knowing what to order. Hmm,let me just try hot brown soup. I suggested to myself as I stood up and walked to the bartender or whatever they call it.

"He's here" Stephanie said loudly and I turned back to look at Smith dressed nicely in a white suit as if he's the celebrant. He walked to Stephanie's table and said something to the three of them. He started walking towards me and I smiled at him.

"Hey Smith" I beamed at him. "Hi Khair, you look beautiful" he complimented and I smiled muttering 'thank you'. I collected my hot soup and turn to walk away but Smith was still standing like a stone. "Uhm Smith,can you move please?" I requested as nicely as possible.

He moved but not in the direction I requested. He moved closer to me. I mean too close,really really close. If not because of the bowl of soup separating us,I think he would have entered my body by now. "Smith,you suit is white and you don't want to get it stained by this soup right?" I said nervously and he kept smiling.

God,his smile is getting creepy now. "I don't care" he finally replied leaning his head closer. My hands started shaking and I wasn't thinking straight again. I turned my eyeballs sideways and saw the few people inside the cafe weren't even paying attention to us.

Smith came closer almost ki.....pecking me,and before I knew what I was doing, I released the bowl of the hot soup on him and he screamed.

"Ouch Khair, do you want to kill me?" Smith shouted and everyone's attention turned completely to us,well especially me.

Stupid! Stupid!! Stupid!!! Stupid!!!! DAMN STUPID!!!!!

What should I do now?

I looked at his now ruined suit. "Smith..

I... I don't know.. I...I'm so..sorry.. I didn't mean to" I stutter trying to help him up.

"You stupid bitch!" He spat and everyone gasped. Where is Maya in this situation? "I'm sorry" I repeated holding his hands so that he can at least get up. In less than a sec,a hard slap landed on my cheek by smith and I fall on my butt.

Ouch,I never saw that coming.

My vision became blurry with tears as someone helped me up and rushed me to the restroom. "Maya,is that you?" I croaked out. "Yeah" she sighed hugging me. "Why did you do that?" She questioned and I managed to give her 'what the hell look'

"Seriously Maya, don't you see what he was about to do?"

"I wasn't looking. I'm sorry"

"He almost....pecked me" I said not knowing how to say the actual word.

"Ordinary Peck Khair and you poured a hot freaking brown soup on him" Maya tried to defend him and I felt the urge to order another hot brown soup and pour it on her too.

"Not peck Maya. Kiss,he almost did that" I finally admitted in embarrassment.

"Gosh,that's gross. Its good you did that to him. It will serve as example to others." She said and wiped my tears with a tissue paper.

Why are you crying now girl? My brain asked me

I dunno,maybe I'm feeling guilty. I replied inside my head

Come on don't be like that,you did the right thing so now cheer up and smile

And I started smiling like a lunatic." Okayyyy"Maya said looking at me somehow.

"What?" I asked still smiling. "Your sudden smile is creeping me out" she said and I burst out laughing. She looked at me as if I have turned crazy. Or maybe I am turning crazy? I don't know or what if I'm....

Damn,let me keep shut

"Let's go". She said dragging me out if the restroom after she dried my face with a face towel. " Maya,I think I will just go home"I said turning her to look at me. "Oh no you are not" she said trying to push me to the veranda

"You won't understand. I'm embarrassed to go out there and face the people, especially him" I tried explaining to her and she seem to understand. "Just go and enjoy Stephanie's party ok?don't worry about me" I added giving her a small smile.

"Just take care ok? And if you need anything, just give me a call and I will speed walk to your rescue" she said hugging me and left.

I sat down in the cafe when I realised I don't have what will take me home. Dammit

I don't like the idea of a taxi cos i have never been in one before. I guess I just have to wait for Maya in here till she's done. I ordered a cup of smoothie and drank it slowly. Smith suddenly appeared before me and I tried my best not to be scared since we are the only two in the cafe.

"Khair, you disgraced me woefully in front of everyone" he started. "I said I'm very sorry, what more did you want? And you know it's not my fault" I said confidently even though my heart is beating faster than usual.

"You have the guts to say that bitch. I hate you from now on. I hate you and let me get this straight with you,I'm going to take revenge whenever I have the chance to. That,I promise" he said and walked away and that's when I noticed his new black suit.

Oh God! Did he really mean what he said? I need to tell someone about this. I called uncle Haroon and eagerly waited for him to pick up.

"Salam alaikum" I greeted when he picked it up

"Wa alaikumu salam. Hi sis"

"Hey uncle Haroon. I'm in deep shit I think"

"What happened?" ".....what's that" I heard a female voice asking.

"Who's that?" I curiously asked

"Nobody"

"Uncle Haroon, when did you start hiding things from me?"

"Fineeee. Its Habiba"

"Wait, the Habiba I know?as in Maya's cousin?"

"Yes Khair,she's the one"

"When...how did you get to her?"

"Dammit it Khair. Do you want to tell me what happen to you or you will keep asking about Habiba?" He said almost irritated.

"Ok, so you see, I told you about Stephanie right? So she's cerebrating her birthday today and we skipped tutorial classes just for her. We went to a cafe that her friend organised for her party. I ordered a hot brown soup and this Smith, that's the guy that organised the party for her. He came with his white suit and almost kissed me. Out of fear,I poured the hot soup on him 'mistakenly' and now he's threatening that he will take revenge and all that" I finished narrating the story to him sniffing

"Hey don't cry Khair. He won't do anything to you." Habiba said

"I don't know,but he sounded evil."

"Just stay away from him and report to the school if he tries any rubbish" uncle Haroon said.

The two helped me calm down with their words of encouragement. I decided not to ask about Habiba for now cos they will eventually tell me themselves.

Now I just have to stay away from Smith and pray. That's it.
