Wrath

Clarissa was deaf as she descended the stairs with astonishing speed. She was muttering something probably to herself and kept glancing over her shoulder.

Sineas was in hot pursuit.

'Th…Thank you…Thank you for supper, Miss, Mrs. Murphy,' she stuttered facing Aunt Janice who looked awestruck whilst standing behind the couch in the living room. Clarissa concluded with a quivering nod then made for the door. She banged it in Sineas' face.

He could hear her soft footsteps as they descended the steps. He heard them reach the pavement then patted their way into oblivion. Sineas was left staring hopelessly at the door. He began rubbing his fingers nervously. He heard slow and steady footsteps approach from behind him.

Aunt Janice looked serious. Her fingers were twitching continually beside her. 'What did you do?' she whispered at him.

He bowed his head low. 'Nothing,' he whispered back.

'That sure didn't look like nothing, Sin. What…did…you…do?'

He shrugged. 'I think the room was too dark for her…or too cold, I don't know.'

'Really?' she grinned. Her grin was hard to decipher. It did not expose any emotion whatsoever. She continued, 'Maybe the darkness and the cold weren't in the room. Maybe they're in you.'

'What do you mean by that, Aunt Janice?' His eyes were still on the floor.

'That you had one chance.' She slowly raised a finger at him, 'One chance to act normal like everyone else and you go and frighten the only person who was willing to give a damn about you!'

'But I didn't do anything…'

She swung her entire body and slapped his cheek with the back of her hand. The sound echoed throughout the house.

The blow felt like three consecutive wasp stings. He staggered back, dizzy, but managed to stay on his feet. The house now looked foggy.

'What did I ever do to deserve a son like you!' She yelled directly into his slumped head. 'A thing to detest! A thing so hard to love!'

He bowed his head even lower. He could feel tears fighting hard to run a marathon down his cheek. With great difficulty, he managed to forbid them. They just loitered at the edges, waiting for consent. He was able to catch a glimpse of her fingers. The twitching was slowly decreasing its velocity. They became still.

Keeping his head to the floor, he raised his eyes at her. Her mouth was twitching fast.

'Oh, my boy! Sin! Sineas!' she pulled him into her arms and cradled his head in her bosom. 'I'm so sorry, son! I am so sorry! Mama will never hurt you again…ever!' she grabbed both his cheeks and turned his eyes towards hers. 'Do you hear me, my boy? I will never hurt you again.' Her eyes were glistening with tears.

His mouth shook as he nodded his head slowly at her. She pulled him back into an even tighter embrace this time. He allowed just one drop to make its way down his cheek.
