Chen Yeliang dashed out of the building with a person over his shoulder.
The workers outside had already fled. The brightly lit chemical plant compound was totally silent except for the sound of Chen Yeliang running and panting.
He ran past the Ferrari. With his current physical fitness level, he could easily carry the injured worker to the main gate faster than shoving him into the Ferrari and then reversing out.
From afar, Chen Yeliang could see the comforting flashing red and blue lights at the main gate of the facility compound.
Officer Zhao stood at the front of the crowd. He was helping the security captain conduct a roll-call of the employees, occasionally looking into the facility compound with concern.
When he saw Chen Yeliang dashing out with a person on his shoulder, he shoved the clipboard into the chest of the person nearest to him and rushed towards Chen Yeliang.
"Thank goodness you guys came out. I was thinking of going in to look for you!" Officer Zhao said worriedly.
Chen Yeliang laid the worker down, transferring him into Officer Zhao's arms. "He was stabbed by a rusty blade. He must be sent to the hospital immediately!"
As if to prove that he was seriously injured, the worker who had been silent all this while started to moan, unsettling everyone nearby.
"Somebody send this guy to the hospital pronto!" Officer Zhao called out to someone at the back of the crowd.
A young and inexperienced police officer squeezed through the crowd and emerged to collect the worker from Officer Zhao. He helped him into the police car before leaving by the same way they came in.
Chen Yeliang looked at the remaining police car with its flashing lights and asked in surprise, "You guys only brought two cars?"
Officer Zhao said with resignation, "We were in too much of a hurry to set off. Only three cars in total were deployed, and one is parked at the second-hand furniture factory. Why? Are there more casualties inside?"
Chen Yeliang took some time to catch his breath. "I don't think so, but Xiong Chang and Qiu Pengpai are still busy inside!"
Nearby, the security captain's expression promptly darkened when he heard what Chen Yeliang said. His fists clenched and relaxed, but he did not say anything in the end.
Officer Zhao's eyelids twitched as he slowly said, "Busy… with… what…"
Inside the warehouse, Qiu Pengpai helped Xiong Chang up.
Xiong Chang's wounds were hurting like crazy. On top of that, he had been on the receiving end of Chen Yeliang's relentless attacks and was now completely disoriented.
"Old pal? Old pal!"
Even when Qiu Pengpai shouted at the top of his lungs, there was no response. He pried open Xiong Chang's eyelids and saw that his black pupils were getting wider. He was on the verge of passing out.
"Kill… kill… I must kill that b*stard… Chen Yeliang…" Xiong Chang's lips moved as he mumbled.
Obsessed with that thought, Xiong Chang suddenly opened his eyes as if resurrected from death and stared at the metal piece in his hand.
Blood seeped out from between his tightly clenched teeth. The distinct sickly sweet taste of blood imbued his mind with exceptional clarity. Blood-stained saliva dripped from the corner of his mouth onto the ground.
Qiu Pengpai stared at Xiong Chang's mouth full of red-stained teeth and took a step back in fear. He then turned around and limped out painfully while dragging his leg.
"Crazy, he's gone crazy!"
His survival instincts pressed him to flee this dangerous place.
He had barely taken two steps when he heard Xiong Chang standing up behind him.
It was as if something had suddenly snapped. Qiu Pengpai's legs refused to listen to him and his body trembled uncontrollably.
He turned around slowly, and his horrified eyes beheld the barrel of the raised gun in Xiong Chang's hand.
The gun wasn't pointed at him or Xiong Chang himself, but at the three-meter-tall storage tank.
Bang!
Ignition and the resulting blast happened in a flash. The raging fire spread out faster than its roar and engulfed Xiong Chang's body. The ruthless tongues of the flames rapidly licked all over Qiu Pengpai's body, incinerating him into ashes along with his terrified gaze!
Boom—
A huge blast was heard from within the warehouse, causing the ground to shake!
The ferocious flames were like a huge out-of-control beast, charging and shattering the glass and doors of the facility buildings with its massive impact.
The van and the Ferrari parked at the inner entrance were instantly consumed by the flames. The van went up in flames like a piece of paper, its soaring sparks floating to the warehouse on the opposite side, igniting the chemicals there!
The workers at the main gate were so terrified that they covered their heads. The flames that soared into the sky cast an orange glow over everyone's faces!
"It exploded! Run!"
"The facility is on fire, run for your life!"
The big group of workers scattered like birds and beasts, fleeing in panic.
As a result of the close proximity of the workers huddled together, they collided with one another in their chaotic attempts to flee. The more diminutive ones were knocked to the ground, crushed by the merciless stampedes!
"Don't panic! Don't panic! Someone has fallen down!" Officer Zhao tried to maintain order.
His voice was drowned out by the repeated explosions and could not reach the panicked workers' ears.
The few police officers who came with him tried their best to maintain order. They held their ground against the onrushing crowd, enduring the full impact of the workers colliding into them as they made their way towards the fallen.
They were like fish swimming against the current. For every one meter they pressed forward, they were pushed back five meters by the human waves. In the end no progress was made.
It was not possible for a mere few police officers to take control of such a massive and chaotic situation.
The live stream viewers were also worried. Before the drone's camera could switch to the center of the explosion, it got blown away by the blast. The camera spun several times before finally stabilizing itself.
The shuddering camera view was unsettling.
"Those two bad guys actually blew up the chemical plant! If you want to die, go die yourself!"
"Help! The volcano is going to erupt! It's the end of the world!"
"My family lives nearby. The blast shattered the glass in our kitchen. The town council has come to evacuate us."
Within a few minutes, the entire city's attention was riveted on blaze.
Chen Yeliang looked at the flames shooting skywards in the distance, as if they were trying to ignite the sky. Thick smoke billowed upwards, blanketing the sky and the moon without leaving a single gap.
The two buildings were on fire. Hundreds of chemical storage tanks teetered in the extreme heat, setting off intermittent smaller explosions. The chemical plant resembled hell on earth.
There were still four or five buildings inside which could potentially explode if ignited. When that happened, it would set off a chain of events and the whole row of factories on the banks of the Hanghe River would not be spared!
Chen Yeliang's bright eyes reflected the dancing flames as his nails dug deep into his palms.
At this critical moment, four flaming red fire trucks approached the crowd, bringing with them hope.
Lu Ruijin, the Hazmat Fire Chief, hopped off the truck, shocked by the magnitude of the blaze before his eyes.
He immediately located Officer Zhao and asked, "Is there anyone else inside?"
Officer Zhao looked worried. "I'm not sure. We were just conducting a roll call, and now everything's in a mess…"
Chen Yeliang said in surprise, "Not all the people have been accounted for?"
From the time he arranged for people to evacuate to the time he left the factory, almost fifteen minutes had lapsed. Within that time frame, the roll call should have been completed. Why wasn't he done?
Chen Yeliang's razor-sharp eyes locked onto the security captain. In order to avoid the chaotic crowd, he was hiding in the guardhouse like a coward.
It was as though he could feel Chen Yeliang's gaze on him. He raised his head and looked out in trepidation.
Chen Yeliang pushed through the crowd to get to the guardhouse. With one hand, he dragged the security captain out and asked, "Why didn't you complete the roll call? What were you doing just now?"
The security captain was so intimidated by Chen Yeliang's imposing manner that his legs were trembling like a frightened chick.
"I was doing the roll call just now too. Then… there were… a few people who didn't answer. I've been looking for them…"
When he heard that, Chen Yeliang was so incensed at the whole sequence of events that culminated in this latest news that he exploded. Those who couldn't answer would definitely not be present but still stuck inside!
