For every action, there must be a reaction. The sin of Greed's actions earlier in the meeting with Danny put the final nail in his coffin. Right now, Alex was not trying to save him, he simply wanted to make sure Damon recovers his power before killing him and consuming him. If Eve needs the sin of greed then the sin of gluttony will become the sin of greed. 

With the power of the devour soul core, he could consume anything in this world and assimilate its abilities.

Why would he need other sins when he can become all the sins combined?
