I exited a portal and landed on the floor of the roof of the Stark tower, my tentacles flaring as a frisbee smashed into my forcefield. Instantly, the rebound effect of my forcefield activated, send the shield flying right back at the perpetrator with nearly twice the force.
Captain America caught shield, but he was sent stumbling back, crashing onto the floor, his palms bleeding.
I scanned the roof and saw the Avengers form a human barrier between me and Stark.
Even one armed Stan was ready to fight, hammer in hand.
"You won't touch my friends!" Thor cried, fear in his eyes, his hands shaking, the hammer heavy in his grasp.
He charged me, slamming his hammer on my forcefield, waves of lightning crackling on the surface, arcs dancing around me, again and again.
I sighed as my nanomachine armor reformed around me.
The next time he swung his his hammer, I shut off the forcefield, wrapping my defense mesh around my arm, and caught the hammer mid swing, lightning discharging into my defense mesh before harmlessly dissipating into the roof below, charring it black.
"Wha- How?" Thor exclaimed.
I did not humor him, instead twisting his arm, as the hammer fell to the floor.
Thor hissed in pain retreating a few steps.
I on the other hand tapped my earpiece and downloading a personality type similar to Thor's into my brain chip, simulating his demeanor.
Time to destroy Thor's entire sense of identity!
I grinned evilly.
My entire body language shifted and attitude changed as I knelt down and grabbed the handle of the hammer.
Everyone watched with bated breath, and I pulled, lifting up the hammer, ever so slowly for effect.
Arcs of lightning danced between the hammer and the floor before spreading out further aboard covering the roof in a dome of thunder.
Winds howled around me, dust and debris picking up in the mini storm as I hoisted the hammer high.
Clouds gathered in the sky above, and a bolt of lightning slammed down upon the hammer.
An archaic voice whispered in the wind.
'Whoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor!'
"Hm? Neat!" I laughed gragariously, the new personality making some cosmetic changes to my manner of speech. Gone were the deep, smooth dulcet tones of my voice. I spoke louder and more .... crudely.
Extroverts.... Ugh.
I fliped the hammer in my hand and played with it a bit as Thor stood there gobsmacked.
"You might want to close that jaw, buddy. A bird might start nesting in there if you stay like that long!" I laughed. Loudly.
"No! No! How are you worthy?! How is he worthy?!" He looked at me then at his friends around him in despair.
I smiled deviously.
"What makes you think you were ever worthy? You are a snot nosed, stuck up princeling, born with a diamond spoon in his mouth from day one.
You were born into the god business Thor, but I earned my way in. If anyone should be worthy of great power, I believe it would be me, the researcher, who just rejected the throne of the universe. More power than you can ever imagine.
Well more so than you, at least, though that isn't a high bar to clear, I suppose.
Ask yourself Thor. Are you really worthy? What makes you worthy? I mean look at yourself. One armed, sore loser. How will you protect Asgard as it's ruler if you can't even protect one single city. Isn't it obvious by now that the hammer has abandoned you?"
His face warped in shame and guilt as he stood there, grinding his teeth.
"Don't say it!" He begged, misty eyed, as he took a step forward, hand extended towards the hammer, his eyes pleading for it to come back to him but it didn't so much as budge in my arms.
"YOU ARE NOT WORTHY!" I announced, gloating in my victory.
His hand shook, his lips quivered as rage born from humiliation slowly replaced his fear.
He stomped over trying to snatch the hammer from my hands only to be stopped by my forcefield.
Ah, it feels good to break people.
The hammer suddenly felt heavier in my hands, and it took effort to keep it stable.
Immediately I returned to the gregarious personality.
Gloating can be done later.
Let's deal with Thor first.
"Thor, step back, or you'll lose another hand today. To your own hammer no less!" I warned, as my sensors felt an energy trying to penetrate my forcefield and my earpiece buzzed.
"Higher consciousness detected. Penetration attempt thwarted." My A.I. quietly whispered in my ear.
Good.
Looks like Odin and Heimdall are finally paying attention to this.
This will save me some work.
I smiled.
"Odin, Heimdall. I know you're watching. I don't want to have to wipe out the Asgardians from the universe. So either you deal with your wayward son or I will. And if I have to deal with him....." I left the threat unsaid.
"What? Who are you talking to? My father is in Asgar-"
The gazes shifted for a moment before a rainbow beam shit down from the sky, and Thor and Loki began to dissipate into motes of light.
The Bifrost!
The Asgardian teleportation system that let's them go anywhere in the universe almost instantly.
I looked at Thor and smiled.
"Sorry about that. I was just messing with. Here!" I said to his surprise and threw the hammer into the beam of light as well, letting it go with them.
I didn't need Mjolnir. Not only are my regular weapons far stronger than that two bit hammer, I also couldn't use it without keeping up this fake mindset all the time, so no point in keeping it. Best to let it go back home.
I can always just walk in and steal it again if I want it.
The moment the bifrost disappeared, I deleted the fake personality from my bio chip and felt my usual cold and rational personality return, my back hunched slightly, my shoudlers loosened, relaxed and my eyes drooped ever so slightly.
And I immediately slapped myself as realisation struck.
What was I thinking?!
I just gave back the hammer!
I could have used it for research, reforged it, or a million other things!
Why did I even- Ugh!
Fuck sportsmanship!
I am literally never sportsmanly!
Oooh!
I am never putting on that stupid personality ever again.
Stupid! Stupid!
Why do I get carried away into my sadistic fantasies?!
There was literally no need for me to break him!
No.
I took a deep breath.
"Foo!" I let out a breath.
No. Focus. Let's kill Tony first.
I looked at the rest of the Avengers and let out a breath.
Let's do this.
I took another step forward.
"Wait!" Banner cried out stepping between me and Stark as Cap got back onto his feet.
"Let's ta-"
My tentacles tore into Banner's chest, and without a word ripped his heart out, crushing it before his own horrified eyes.
He was going to be fine. The CodeRed made him immortal for the next hour or so.
I looked down and I could already see his heart regenerating.
Yup.
I took another step forward, swatting away Hawkeye and Black Widow's pathetic attempts at defending Tony, throwing them into portals to the middle east while I was at it.
With them gone I raised my tentackes at Stark as Cap brought his shield forward to block my oncoming attack.
I just changed it's direction mid thrust and grabbed the shield, jerking it right out of Cap's arms, as he looked at me in shock.
"How?!" He exclaimed.
"What? Did you think I couldn't use these for finer movements?
Cap, didn't you listen to what I said earlier? I'm a researcher. These tentacles? They aren't weapons of war. They are for helping me in my experiments. That laser beam? It's for welding parts together. The electric jammer is for testing out smaller modules privately before I integrate them into my larger builds. I can disect a fly and sew it up, so that it was still able to return to whatever dumpster it calls home with these. That's how fine tuned these tentacles are. Sheesh.
I guess that's about what I can expect from the guy who had the opportunity of a lifetime with this fascinating metal and decided to make it into a glorified frisbee.
I was joking about Thor and his hammer earlier but seriously, if you can't think of a better use for vibranium and adamantium than making it into a weapon to hurt others? Maybe you don't deserve the it." I shook my head in disapproval.
"It's a shield, to protect others." Cap argued.
Cap squared up, getting his fists before him, ready to continue.
"Really?" I raised a tentacle and pointed at Banner.
"I can do this all day!" He replied.
How cute!
He thinks this is going to be a fight!
I humored him though.
"And yet curiously the most common way you use this 'shield' of yours is throwing it at people's heads and severing their arms with it. That's some serious injury potential right there Cap. This isn't the 1940s where we just chuck people into asylums and crack their brains open willy nilly. You got to take responsibility for the stuff you wield." I said, and threw the shield into a portal back into my ship.
He leapt at it, only to get wrapped up by my tentacles.
"You'll get that shield back when you learn to be more responsible with the weapons handed to you." I said, wagging my finger at him, before grabbing him and chucking him into a portal.
"Wha-"
"Now go and rescue some civilians or something. Lots of people need help down there." I added and turned to Tony again.
Tony for his part was till now deep in thought, trying to find a way to save his hide.
But now seeing me closing in, he abandoned whatever convoluted strategy he had been going for and just raised his hands in the air.
"I'll just stop inventing!" He cried out.
"What?" I asked, amused.
"No. Seriously. I will stop. If you let me go."
"Really? Why don't I believe that?" I said, my tentacles, wrapping around him, liftin him up.
"Because you've got daddy issues?" Stark groaned, but couldn't resist pulling a quip.
"Which, it's attractive on women, but...." He shrugged.
"Famous last words." I chuckled and prepared to wring him like a wet towel, when suddenly a golden light flashed beside me.
"Stop!"
