Feeling bored, Hena had decided to do the laundry. The other day's event was still clear for her. Kissing the prince, her future husband had produced her a euphoric feeling she had never experienced before.
She thought of it as a passing feeling. It must have been because she didn't have much experience with men, except for the fact that she used to like that gentlemanly boy she met when she was an eight-year-old girl.
The image of him stayed on her mind, his sweet smile and gentle stare. Luka was the exact opposite of her ideal type. Thinking of it objectively, he was someone who's good at making her feel uncomfortable. But she had to bear with it for the sake of her kingdom.
"Why are you making the lady do the laundry?"
A deep penetrating voice echoed the whole palace. Hena turned her head and saw a knight scolding the group of palace maids near her. As an inexperienced laundrywoman, she decided to wash the bedsheets with her feet on the river.
"The river is vast, what if she ends up tripping over herself?" The knight asked with his brows furrowed. "Who among you here are going to take responsibility for it?"
Finding her balance, Hena stood still on top of the rock and bedsheet she was doing and faced him.
"Don't worry, I was the one who insisted to be here," Hena said, making sure her point was getting across the unknown man. "I wanted to do something as I was extremely bored inside the palace—-"
Hena's words were cut off as she noticed a tall handsome man in front of her. His shoulder-length, slicked-back dark brown hair made him appear manly. The way he stared at Hena with such a warm gaze would make anyone's heart skip a beat.
In an instant, she was reminded of her childhood friend. But it was a little bit strange, humans would only go to the borders of the East Kingdom and become servants.
It was impossible for any human to attain a certain status, not unless the person is directly involved with any royalty.
"Be careful, pr—" the knight abruptly stopped and corrected himself. "My lady."
He encircle his right arm on her waist and grabbed her left arm, guiding her to find her balance. Since the two of them were on an uneven surface, the two of them ended up losing their overall balance.
"Wah!"
Hena let out a small shriek as she fell on top of the nameless knight. He shifted both of their weights towards the water and ended up safely falling into the river.
"Lady Hena!" the maidservants cried after they witnessed the whole situation, running over the river bank. Their eyes shifted from left to right as they were momentarily panicked.
Hena's face landed on the knight's broad chest. It smelled a little bit of sweat, a scent that was similar to that of a cinnamon bark invaded her sense of smell.
It was a pleasing scent. For a moment, she felt her eyes flash. She slightly raised her head and fixed her gaze on the knight's flesh. His neck looked extremely appetizing for her.
A vampire's instinct.
She was still a half-vampire.
"Knight Mark!" the maidservants yelled.
Good thing, Hena was able to control herself. The craving of blood suddenly disappeared. And she was back to her usual self. Clearing her throat, she abruptly stood up and fixed her gaze on her wet dress.
"Ha.."
Letting out a sigh of disappointment, she then fixed her eyes onto the knight who had apparently saved her. He was incredibly wet with water as well and appeared surprised.
Realizing the situation, the knight stood up and bowed his head.
"I apologize for what happened, my lady." He spoke, putting his right palm on his chest. "I didn't expect to lose my balance."
"It's okay as it was my fault," Hena replied, clearing her throat. She wanted to stay calm but she was definitely astonished.
Luka had said that as a half-vampire, she was still considered human, how come she just wanted to sink her teeth in this knight's flesh?
And everyone here is a vampire, aside from her. How come this happened?
"You must be surprised, my lady." The knight flashed his pearly white teeth and continued. "I am human, but the prince and I had a blood pact that made me invulnerable against any bite from vampires."
Hena couldn't believe her ears. "You're human?"
With a nod, the knight replied. "Yes, I am. My name is Mark, and I am the royal knight that protects the royal family."
'If it was possible to do a blood pact and protect humans from being vampires then why did that prince make me a vampire?!' she thought to herself.
Sadly, no one is able to know the reason. Only Prince Luka could.
"Lady Hena," the maidservants went into the river and grabbed both of her arms. "You are already too wet, you need to take a bath and change your clothes so you won't get a cold."
"I guess I need to do that as well," Mark replied with a small laugh. "Maidservants, please escort the lady back to her chambers."
"But my laundries!"
"The maidservants will do it for you, my lady." The knight continued to smile at her as if she was the world to him. "Now, don't worry about it. Go inside the palace and change your clothes."
"But…"
"Or else, all of us will receive a scolding from the queen and the prince."
Hena had no choice but took a deep breath and nod in agreement, saying, "I understand."
With those last words, the maidservants were quick to guide her away from the river, leaving the bedsheets behind. Darting over one last glance, Hena racked her brain and tried to remember who that familiar man was.
The angelic face and gentle smile he had reminded her of her childhood friend.
She didn't have any memories left about him after she came into an accident with him. Her parents told her that the friend she had had already migrated to another kingdom.
She could only remember fragments of his face but somehow she became quite sure that it was him.
What was more shocking, finding out her childhood friend became a knight in the vampire kingdom or the reawakening of her vampire instincts?
Things are definitely getting even more interesting.
