Unrequited love

"After what?" I prodded.

She was still staring at something behind me as her hand came up in a wave.

Turning around, my eyes collided with August's and at that moment, I didn't know what to do with my facial muscles.

"Should I smile? Should I not smile? Should I wave? What do I do?"

A torrent of thoughts and skepticisms flooded my mind but before I could come to a decision, he gave a sad smile and walked off towards the staircase by my left and vanished upstairs.

"You know, the party doesn't start till nine, so this is the perfect opportunity to pull off your apologies and also save him from the emotional distress of being in love with your big head," She said, trying to encourage me.

Instead, all I wanted to do was chicken out and run away.

Despite all my bravado, I hated confrontations of any kind.
