"Mom?" I called out into the silence.

My Nigerian mind was screaming at me to run as fast as my legs could carry me and never look back and I almost did.

I had unconsciously found myself moving back to the door where I just stepped in but I stopped in my tracks.

Putting fear behind me, I took in a deep, calming breath and confidently strode into the house.

There was nobody in the living room or my parents' rooms.

Also, there were no signs of violence or a struggle so I could at least scratch that from my worry list.

As I moved to drop my bag in my room, muffled voices coming from my dad's study caught my attention, causing me to halt.

I moved closer to the source of the voices and poked my head in to find my mom and dad seated across an unfamiliar man in a crisp, black suit.

"What's going on? I was looking for you."
