Chapter 60: Dark Fae Rising

"Avery," I yelled as I helplessly watched her fall three feet from me. But I was too far away to save her. To do anything. I pumped my legs faster, passing up Xzander who ran beside me.

Malcolm laughed. Fucker was going to regret touching Avery. I flung myself at my cousin. Before I could reach him, a phantom fist punched into my chest. I flew backward into a tree. Pain lanced up my spine and the back of my head. 

This isn't my cousin. I had to tell myself over and over as I stood, ignoring the pain and marching forward. This was the dark Fae king who had been exiled here thousands of years ago - the one Xzander told me about.

"Get to Avery, I'll keep him busy." Xzander's magic sailed across the clearing. 

I hobbled over to her side and knelt beside her. Blood covered her neck and more pooled in a puddle around the dragonroot. Its skull blossoms were crimson, and my throat clenched. She wasn't breathing.
