A Warm Welcome
John woke up and began to look around realizing he was in the same room that he was before. So, he knew he had to be back in the wolf village. He also realized that he was covered in bandages and had nothing but his underwear on.
``Guess I'm lucky to be alive right now`` he said thinking to himself while laying down on the bed.
He got up but felt a bit of pain all over his body.
``Guess my wounds haven't fully recovered yet. ``
He got off the bed and began to limp towards the mirror. He saw how beaten up he was that he couldn't help but chuckle.
``Guess it's not my time yet. ``
The door opened and Ashley saw John out of bed.
``What are you doing! You should be laying down recovering! Your wounds have not recovered yet! `` she said in a worried tone.
``I'm fine Ashley. You don't have to worry so much. ``
``Your fine? You're fine! Do you have any idea how injured you were! When they took you back to the village, I was surprised by the amount of injuries you received. And not to mention that you almost got killed fighting the demon wolf! ``
Johns was surprised.
``How do you know about that? ``
``My father told me about it. He was the one of the people that helped you. ``
John was grateful but realized about the kids that he was protecting.
``Wait! The kids! Are they alright?!``
``Their fine. They manage to escape, and we treated their injuries already. ``
John gave a sigh of relief.
``This idiot, almost at death's door and is still worried about the kids`` She said thinking to herself. She couldn't help but give a smile.
``By the way Ashley, how long was I out for? ``
``Hmm, I'll say 3 days. ``
``3 days! `` John shockingly said.
``What are you worried about? It's not like you had something urgent to do. ``
``That's true. I was just shocked that's all. ``
Ashley chuckled.
``Before I forget, let's change your bandages. That's the reason I came here in the first place. ``
``You don't need to do that. Actually, I was going to ask you if you could help me take off all the bandages. ``
``What? What about your wounds? ``
``I have a healing potion for it. So, you don't need to worry. ``
``Healing potion? Do you have one of those? ``
``Yea. ``
John took out a healing potion out of his ring.
``Wow! I didn't know you had a space ring. ``
``Yup. I was lucky that my brother gave it to me. It was from my mother`` he said, giving a smile.
``That's cool. You don't know how lucky you are to have one of those? ``
``Are they really that rare? ``
``I wouldn't say rare, more like they are really expensive. I heard that only nobles and royals have them. ``
``How much does one cost? ``
``I'm not too sure. All I know is that they're really expensive to buy one. ``
``Then if they're really expensive, then I guess I'm lucky to have one then`` John said, giving a smile at her.
``Indeed, now, let's get you healed. Thanks to the healing potion, your wounds will hear in no time. ``
``Do you know how to use it? ``
``Of course, I'm not that stupid. All I need to do is pour it on your wounds. ``
John gave her the healing potion and she started to remove the bandages. Then, she began to pour it on John`s wound. The wounds started to heal immediately.
``Does it hurt? ``
``No at all. It does tickle though. ``
Ashley kept on pouring until she finished pouring it on all of the wounds.
``How do you feel? ``
John stood up and started to move.
``I feel fine. I don't feel any pain anymore. ``
``That's good. Here you go, there's still some left. ``
Ashley gave back the healing potion. John grabbed it and put it back in his ring.
``By the way, do you mind getting me some cloths, I don't want to walk around the village half naked. ``
``Right, sorry about that, I`ll go get the clothes right now`` she said, leaving the room.
A couple of minutes passed, and Ashley came back with the clothes and shoes and left them on the bed.
``Thank you again Ashley for the clothes and shoes. ``
Ashley smiled and left the room. John began dressing up and walked out of the room once he was finished. He saw Ashley waiting for him and approached her.
``Thank you and your people for helping me. I`ll be leaving now. ``
``Leaving? Who told you to leave? ``
``It's obvious that I'm not welcome here since I got kicked out before. ``
``I wouldn't be too sure about that. ``
John gave her a confused look.
``What do you mean? ``
She smiled.
``You'll see. ``
Still confused, John walked out the door and Ashley followed. Once he was outside, he saw other beast people doing their usual thing. When one of them spotted him, he shouted,
``Everyone look! He's awake! ``
Everybody looked at him and started to approach John. John, who stood still and confused, was approached by so many beast people in front of him.
``Are you alright! ``
``Are you ok! ``
``How do you feel! ``
``Do you need anything! ``
John was bombarded by many questions that he couldn't even answer. But what shocked him is the question that they were asking were whether or not he feels okay. He looked at Ashley and she gave him a big smile.
``Alright alright, settle down people. ``
John looked back to see who was talking and it turned out to be Ashley`s father.
``You guys are making him uncomfortable. ``
``I`m sorry chief, I just wanted to see if he was okay`` one of them said.
``Yea, we were just worried,'' another said.
``It's fine to be worried but don't just go up to him like that. You don't want him to be scared of you know, don't you? ``
Everyone started to settle down.
``Good, now that everyone has settled down, is there anything you guys like to say to him? ``
Everyone looked at John.
``Thank you! `` all of them said.
John was confused and looked at Ashley`s father.
``Why are they thanking me? I didn't do anything. ``
``What do you mean you didn't do anything? You saved Kevin and Iris from danger. ``
``Kevin and Iris? ``
``You don't remember? They were the kids that you saved in the forest. ``
``Oh! ``
``Yea. They are thanking you for protecting them``.
``You guys don't have to thank me. I just did what anyone would have done. ``
``You don't need to be so modest, John. No one could have done what you did back there. Now, is there anything you would like as a reward for helping them? ``
John was surprised by the question.
``You don't have to give me anything really. I didn't help for a reward. ``
``You don't have to be shy, tell us what you want, and we will give it to you. ``
``You don't have to really, as I said before, I didn't do it for-``
Before he could finish, Ashley interrupted him.
``You should just say what you want. He's not going to stop asking unless you tell him. ``
John thought about it.
``Well, if you put it like that, then I do have something in mind. ``
Everyone was curious about what he was going to say.
``If it's alright, could I see Kevin and Iris. I wanted to see how they're doing. ``
Everyone stared at John, including Ashley.
``Did I say something I shouldn't have? `` John said, thinking to himself nervously.
Then, out of nowhere, Ashley`s father started to laugh. After he started to laugh, everybody started to laugh as well including Ashley. John was in a state of confusion since he didn't know why they were laughing.
``Oh boy! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time`` Ashley`s father said.
``Same here. That was too funny! `` Ashley said, still laughing.
``Umm, could someone fill me in. I feel like I missed something here`` John said.
``You see John, that was a test my father had set up for you. He wanted to know whether or not you were telling the truth. ``
``But I was telling the truth, wasn't I? ``
Ashley`s father started to speak to John.
``I was just making sure about that. If you didn't know John, humans lie and pretend to be friendly because they want something from us. That's why we were cautious around your decision because we didn't know whether or not you were the same as them. But it turns out you weren't. And besides, we weren't expecting you to request something like that. ``
Ashley`s father looked at the crowd,
``Now! To honor his recovery and saving the life of both Iris and Kevin, we're going to have a celebration tonight. ``
The whole crowd started to cheer.
``Now everyone! Let's get started! ``
Everyone started to leave and started preparing for the celebration.
John stood there shocked by what just happened.
``You know, I'm surprised that everyone is happy for you`` Ashley`s father said to John.
``I'm surprised as well to the point that I was shocked. ``
``You said you wanted to see Iris and Kevin, right? ``
``Yea. I wanted to see if they are okay. ``
He smiled at what he said.
``Alright then, Ashley will lead you to them, right Ashley? ``
``Yup`` she said, giving a smile.
``Alright then, I'll be heading out now. ``
``Where are you going sir? ``
``Sir? You don't have to call me that. ``
``Then what should I call you? ``
``Hmm, just call me Daniel. ``
``Alright Daniel, where are you headed? ``
``I'm going with my team to the forest to hunt. Since it's going to be a big celebration, we got to catch a lot of animals to eat. ``
``Oh, alright then. ``
Daniel waved goodbye and left.
``Alright then, now that's over, let's go see the kids. ``
John nodded and followed Ashley.
``I was meaning to ask you, what happened to the demon wolf? Did you guys kill it? ``
``My father did. But he was just lucky. He told me if it wasn't the fact that it was distracted by you, he wouldn't have been able to defeat it. ``
``Oh. What did you guys do with it? ``
``We took it to the blacksmith. We thought it would be a good idea to use the demon wolf as materials for weapons and armor.
``That's good then. I thought you guys had left it. ``
``Nope, the demon wolf is too valuable to be left behind. ``
``Is that so? ``
``Yup. ``
Ashley stopped in front of a house.
``Were here`` she said.
She began knocking on the door. The door opened and they were greeted by a woman.
``Hey Ashley, how have you been? ``
``I've been alright. And you? ``
``I've been good, is there something you need? ``
``No. We came here because he wanted to see Iris and Kevin. ``
Ashley pointed at John.
She began to approach John.
``You must be the person that saved Iris and Kevin! I just want to say how thankful I am for you to be able to save them both! ``
``I'm happy that they were able to make it back safe. ``
She smiled.
``Oh, please, come in. Iris and Kevin will be very happy to see you. ``
Ashley and John went inside.
``Is there anything you guys want? Bread, water? ``
``Were fine, I just came here to check on them`` John said.
``Alright, let me go get them. ``
She left and went upstairs. Ashley sat on the couch while John stood.
``It's funny` `Ashley said.
``What is? ``
``That everyone isn't cautious around you. ``
``Yea. No one is giving me the look no more. ``
They both started to chuckle. John was glad that he was able to get along with the beast people in the village. Then, John heard someone coming down the stairs fast.
``Iris wait! ``
John turned around and saw Iris approaching him and then hugged him.
``You're finally awake, mister! I was worried about you! ``
John kind of felt awkward. He didn't expect a hug from her. The woman came down and saw what Iris was doing.
``Iris, could you stop hugging him? That's no way to treat our guest. ``
``Oh, sorry. I was just excited that he had finally woke up. ``
Iris stopped hugging John.
``Sorry about that mister. ``
``It's fine so don't worry about it. You just caught me by surprise. ``
John saw Kevin come down the stairs and went next to Iris.
``Alright you guys, don't you have anything to say to him? `` The woman said.
``Thank you so much mister`` Iris said.
``Yea, thank you for saving us`` Kevin said.
John gave them a smile.
``I`m just glad you guys are ok. ``
``By the way Iris`` Ashley said to her, `` Don't you want to ask him something? ``
``Ask him something? I don't think so. `
John was confused by the conversation they were having.
``Really, then let me refresh your memory, your hero's name. ``
``Ah! Please don't say it in front of him, it's embarrassing. ``
``Oh, don't be shy, your hero is right here in front of you`` she said, teasing her.
``Could someone fill me in here. I'm kind of lost on what you guys are talking about. ``
``Oh sorry. When you passed out, Iris here was worried about you that she would ask me if she could go with me to check up on you`` Ashley said.
``Ah! Please don't say anything anymore! You're embarrassing me! ``
``You don't have to be embarrassed, Iris. After all, you did tell me that he was your hero and that you drew a picture of him. ``
``Mom! ``
Kevin started to laugh, and Iris noticed.
``You shouldn't be laughing. You wanted to know his name more than I did and you were so worried that you would ask me whether he was ok or not``
Kevin's face turned red out of embarrassment.
``Why would you say that in front of everyone! ``
``It's your fault for laughing at me`` Iris said.
While they were going at it, John was happy. This scene reminded him about Terisa when her parents embarrassed her.
``I wonder how everyone is doing? It sucks that I can't see them any time soon. Once I'm able to get back, I wonder what we should do. ``
``John, John`` Ashley said.
John went back to his senses.
``Oh, sorry about that, I spaced out for a bit. ``
``It's fine, as I was saying, you should tell her your name. ``
``But didn't you already say it though? What's the point in me saying it? ``
``Oh don't be like that John. You're their hero. It's better for you to say it yourself. ``
``Alright. ``
John looked at Iris.
``My name is John. It's very nice to meet you Iris. ``
He looked at Kevin.
``And it's very nice to meet you too Kevin. ``
Both Kevin and Iris were happy that their tails began to move.
John was happy that he was able to make them happy.
``Can you play with us John`` Iris said, `` I want you to play with us. ``
John was surprised.
``Is that okay? ``
``I don't mind,'' Iris and Kevin Mom said, `` They wanted to hang out with you since they wanted to know more about you. ``
John looked at Ashley.
``It's fine by me. Go ahead John. I'll be heading out and helping set up the celebration. ``
``You don't need me to help out? ``
``It's not that, Iris and Kevin really want you to hang out with them. I mean just look at them. ``
John looked at them and could tell that they really wanted him to stay.
``Alright then. I guess I will stay. ``
Kevin and Iris were excited, and both the mom and Ashley started to smile.
``Then I'll be heading out now. ``
Everyone said bye to Ashley.
``Now, before you guys play with John, you both have to clean up your room. ``
``But Mom! ``
``No buts, it's either you guys clean your room, or I won't allow you guys to play with him. ``
``Alright. ``
They both said and headed upstairs to clean their room.
``Why don't we have a chat while we wait for them to finish cleaning their room. ``
``Alright. ``
John sat on the kitchen chair, and she sat across from him. John was curious about what they were going to talk about.
``If you don't mind me asking, why did you save them? ``
John was surprised by her question.
``Why do you ask? ``
``It's just because it doesn't make sense to me. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you saving them but you're a human. There's wasn't anything for you to gain from helping them. ``
``I get where you're coming from. I've already heard about the bad reputation we have. But not all humans are like that. ``
``I have to disagree. Every human that I have encountered has always treated me and my kids poorly. And it is not only me, but everyone here who has encountered a human will say the same thing. ``
``Then what about me? If every human is so bad, then does that mean that I'm bad as well? ``
``You're an exception. Honestly, you must be the first human that I ever met that treats everyone well. ``
``Is that so? ``
``Indeed. Not every human is like you. ``
``I wouldn't say that. I know people who treat everyone well as well. ``
``Really? ``
``Of course. I'm sure everyone here will get along with them just fine. ``
``That's quite a statement you just said. I'm curious who they are? ``
``You'll find out once you get to meet them. ``
``Then I'll wait till that day comes. ``
``Oh, before I forget, to answer your question on why I saved Kevin and Iris``
She was curious about what John's answer would be.
``It's because they were in trouble. ``
``Anything else? ``
``Nope. That's it. ``
Confused, she began to question him.
``That's it? That's all it took for you to help them. ``
``Is there any other reason? ``
``I just thought that you did it for another reason. ``
``Nope. ``
She started to laugh.
``Why are you laughing? ``
``It's because you're a really strange human. I didn't expect an answer like that. ``
Before they knew it, they heard footsteps coming down the stairs. ``
``We've finished. Now we can finally play with John`` Iris said.
Kevin nodded in excitement.
``Alright alright. You guys could play with John. ``
``Yay! `` both of them said.
They both grabbed John`s arm.
``Come on John. We're going to have lots of fun`` Iris said.
John got up and followed them.
``You guys have fun`` she said, giving them a smile.
John went up to their room and all started to play together. They played board games, told each other stories, acted out that John was a dragon and both Iris and Kevin were dragon slayer, and much more. Lots of time has passed and when John looked at the window, it was already dark. The woman opened the door and told them to come outside since everything for the celebration was ready. They all got out and went where everyone was.
``Well look who it is`` said someone in a manly voice.
John turned around and it turned out to be Daniel.
``Hey Daniel, finished with the hunting? ``
``Yup. They're cooking them right now. ``
``Hello chief. It's nice to meet you`` the woman said.
``Oh Melisa hello. I see you finally met John. ``
``Yup. ``
``Isn't he a weird one. A human helping out a beast person. Who would've thought huh`` he said and started to laugh?
Melisa started to chuckle.
Daniel looked at Kevin and Iris.
``So, how does it feel to finally meet your hero? ``
``It was cool! `` Iris said.
``Yea! We even played together! `` Kevin said.
``Is that so? Well, I'm just glad that you guys are okay. ``
Both of them started to smile.
``Now then, you guys chose a spot to sit. John's going to sit with me. ``
``That's not fair. I wanted to sit next to John`` Iris said.
``Me too`` Kevin said.
Daniel looked at them and could tell they weren't going to take a no for an answer.
He sighs.
``Alright fine. You guys win. You guys could sit next to John. ``
``Yay`` both of them said.
Melisa chuckled because she found it funny that the village chief was defeated by her children.
Kevin and Iris grabbed John's arm and led him to a table where they could sit. They sat down and both Daniel and Melisa sat at the same table they were at. Later, Ashley saw them and decided to sit down with them. Everyone was chatting and food began to be distributed by everyone. There was bread, fruits, meat, vegetables, and lots of soups. Everyone began to dig in. John could feel the lively atmosphere. Kids playing and running around, beast people chatting with each other, and some arm wrestling to prove who is stronger. It almost felt like he was back at the tavern. Many hours had passed, and all the food was gone.
``Man that was good`` Daniel said, ``haven't had a big meal like that in a while. ``
Everyone nodded in agreement as to what he said.
Then, music started to play, and people began to dance.
``What's going on? `` John said.
``Well you see John. This is how us beast people celebrate`` Daniel said.
``Yea. Every time we celebrate, we go all out`` Ashley said.
``So it's like a tradition you guys do? ``
``Exactly. ``
John was blown away by how they celebrated. And not only that, but he also sees people free dancing and having fun. Usually, when John goes to celebrate at the castle, it's usually just nobles looking for connections. And not only that, but some people that came didn't look like they were enjoying themselves. Even when they were dancing, some really weren't into it. So, to see something like this, John couldn't help but smile. He could feel as if this is something he was missing in his life.
``Aren't you going to join John? `` Ashley said.
``I would like too, but I don't know how to dance sadly. ``
``Ah don't be shy, `` Daniel said, 'Some of us don't know how to either but we still go for it. ``
``I think I will pass. ``
``Welp, then if you aren't going then I will, what about you guys? ``
Everyone agreed except for Kevin and Iris.
``Why aren't you guys going? You guys like to dance`` Melisa said to them.
``No! I'm not going if John isn't going as well, right Kevin. ``
``Yea! It's not going to be fun without him. ``
``Well well John. I guess you have a sticky situation on your hands. Are you still not coming despite you hearing this? `` Daniel said, teasing him.
``Well…``
He looked at Kevin and Iris and was serious that if he doesn't come, they won't either. He didn't want to be the reason that they didn't have fun, so he agreed to join.
``You heard the man, now let's go dance`` Daniel said.
They all got up and headed to where the people were dancing. He just stood there not knowing what to do.
``Still having trouble John`` Ashley said.
``A bit. Like I said, I don't know how to dance. ``
``Then I'll help you. Just follow what I'm doing. ``
``Alright. ``
He tried to follow Ashley`s movements but was still having trouble. Eager to learn, he never gave up. He kept trying over and over until he was able to do it.
``There you go, you got it. ``
``Yea, I did it didn't I.``
Kevin and Iris saw them and approached them.
``I want to go next`` Iris said.
``Me too`` Keivn said.
``Go next to what? `` John said, confused.
``I want to teach you how to dance. It looks like fun. ``
Kevin nodded in agreement.
``Alright then, you guys show John what you got`` Ashley said.
They started to dance, and John paid attention.
``You got that John, now it's your turn. ``
John tried to copy Kevin and Iris moves but failed.
All of them started to laugh since he looked funny trying to copy the dance. John felt embarrassed but at the same time, he was having fun
Once the dancing was over, everyone gathered around.
``Alright, everyone knows why we are celebrating. But in case you don't know, I'll say it again. This celebration is for John. He managed to help two of our people to escape from death. And not only that, but he also put his life on the line for them to escape. Now I don't know about you, but that takes serious guts to do something like that. Don't you guys agree? ``
Everyone started to cheer as they agreed on what Daniel said.
``Now why don't we hear what he has to say, John why don't you come up here and share a few words to us. ``
John felt embarrassed. Even if he didn't want to go up, it felt like he didn't have a choice. If he refused, he thought that everyone would hate him for that. So, he went next to Daniel and looked at everyone. It felt awkward that all of the attention was on him.
``Hello everyone. I just want to say thank you for having me and throwing a celebration. I'm happy that I was able to save Kevin and Iris from danger. And I'm thankful for Daniel's team in saving me. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here. ``
John didn't know what to say next. He felt like his speech was too simple and boring. So, in order to make things more interesting, he decided to use his talent.
``So, to show you my gratitude, I've decided to play for you guys. ``
Everyone was surprised and curious about what John had in store for them. John approached a woman holding the guitar.
``Can I borrow this for a minute? ``
``Sure. ``
She handed her guitar to him. John took it and went in front of the crowd. John checked the strings to see if they were in tune, and they were. He played a couple of notes for himself to get ready to play in front of them. Even though John never played in front of so many people, he just thought of the time when he played for Ela and Brandon. He just thought to himself that this is no different.
``Alright, this song is called `Under the Stars`. ``
Everyone started to get curious. They knew the name sounded nice but what about the song?
John began to play. At first, everyone was enjoying the melody but then suddenly, John began to sing. Everyone was surprised at how well he sang. Not only was the melody good, but his voice too. Everyone stood quiet and listened so as to not make John distracted by them talking. John kept singing until he finished with his song. He looked at the crowd and all of them were staring.
``Did I do something wrong`` he thought to himself.
Then out of nowhere, Ashley began to clap and soon after, everyone started to clap and cheer. John smiled and gave a bow. John could hear them saying how well the song was. Daniel began to speak up.
``Now that's what I call a show. I didn't know you could play and sing John. ``
``Neither did I`` Ashley said.
``I'm just glad everyone liked it. ``
Kevin and Iris approached John and told him how they were surprised and how much they liked the song he just sang.
``Now everyone, that concludes the celebration. Now, everyone here is going to help clean up the place. And once you guys are done, you guys may go home. ``
They all stood up and helped start to clean up. John too helped out. Once they were finished, they all decided to go home but no until they gave John lots of compliments about his song. John felt embarrassed but happy at the same time. Once they were done complimenting him, they all decided to go to their houses.
``Bye John, see you tomorrow`` Kevin said.
``Let's play again tomorrow`` Iris said.
John waved goodbye to them.
``You're really good with kids aren't you. `Ashley said.
``You think? ``
``Yea. They are really attached to you. It's almost like your one of their family members. ``
``Haha. Good thing I've handle children before. ``
``Oh? Are you like a babysitter or something? ``
``No. I helped out 2 children who were in trouble. And after that, they were attach to me. ``
``Is that so? ``
``Yup. I'll tell you about it someday since it's a long story. ``
Daniel approached them.
``So John, where are you going to sleep? ``
John forgot about that. He didn't know where he was going to sleep.
``I don't know. I totally forgot about that. ``
He smiled.
``I had a feeling something like this was going to happen. Why don't you come with us? ``
``Alright. ``
John followed Daniel and Ashley followed right behind John. They arrived at their house and Daniel showed him the room. The same room where they brought him when he was injured.
``This is where you're going to sleep from now on. ``
``You're sure I could sleep here. I don't mind sleeping in the couch. ``
``It's fine. In fact, this is your room now. ``
``My room? ``
``Yup. I decided to let you have this room since you needed somewhere to sleep. ``
``You don't have to do that. ``
``But I want too John. This is my way of saying thank you for what you did. ``
John felt happy.
``I don't know what to say. ``
``You don't have to say anything John. Just know that this house is yours too. And the wolf village will always welcome you. Isn't that right Ashley. ``
``Yea. Everyone here likes you, John. You're one of us now.
John couldn't help but smile.
``Alright, now that I finished what I have to say, I'm going to go to sleep. See you guys' tomorrow. ``
He walked towards his room but stopped since he remembered something.
``Oh John, I forgot to give you this, give me a minute. ``
He went to his room and came out with John's spear.
``Here you go, I forgot to give this back to you. ``
``Oh yea. I almost forgot about the spear. Thanks for giving it back to me. ``
John grabbed the spear.
``If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your spear from? ``
``My brother gave it to me. Why do you ask? ``
``It's because this is one the the best spear I've have used. When I was fighting the demon wolf, my weapon manage to break during the fight. When I saw the spear, I grabbed it and started to use it. The whole time, your spear didn't break, in fact, your spear blade didn't chip during the fight. And the sharpness of the blade is so sharp, that it cut and pierce the wolf like it was nothing. ``
John was surprised about the capabilities of the spear.
``Anyways, if you happen to know about where this spear came from, let me know. I would love to have one. ``
``Sure thing. ``
``Well that's all I have to say. Good night you two. ``
He went in his room and closed the door behind him.
Ashley started to yawn.
``I'm doing the same. See you tomorrow, John. ``
``Yea. Have a good night. ``
She walked towards her room and closed the door.
John put his spear away in his ring and did the same. He closed the door and laid on his bed.
