Isabel, too, was panting heavily from the run. She swallowed hard, catching her breath, pointed at a courtyard house at the end of the alleyway, and said, "There, there!"

Elijah Smith, following Isabel's pointing finger, looked over and then rolled his eyes, squatted down, and put Isabel's shoes in front of her: "That's a private club. I used to come here with a couple of friends. You just got discharged from the hospital and now you're trying to go clubbing? Let's go, I need to take you home to rest now!"

As Elijah Smith was helping Isabel put her shoes on, he grumbled: "What were you thinking, running around barefoot in the middle of the night? What if you step on a piece of glass or something?"

Isabel didn't answer, just kept her eyes on the rather nondescript courtyard house at the end of the alleyway, not even blinking.
