Chapter 4- The Morning After

The sound of the dawn call to prayer from the mosque not far from the VIP room woke me up. I felt my body and hands sore after sleeping while sitting with my hands resting on the table. The events of last night are still vivid in my eyes. I looked for Ali's whereabouts but didn't see him, maybe he had gone to the mosque to pray together as usual.

I rushed to the bathroom, which happened to be empty. After performing ablution and praying at dawn, I joined Brother Indra in preparing morning injection. Suddenly my eyes were glued to the patient's medical record in room nine, and my memory drifted to last night's events.

"When did this patient come, Bro?" I asked with mixed feelings. I immediately took the patient's medical record in room nine and began to open it. I read the patient's ID and seeing her age-matched last night's patient made my chest pound.

"It was around three in the morning," answered Mr. Indra lightly.

I furrowed my brows, I feel like it happened last night around two o'clock, but the patient only came at three in the morning.

"Why?" asked Brother Indra while looking at me in surprise.

I smiled and shook my head. "Sorry, I didn't know a patient was coming."

Brother Indra laughed.

"You slept well earlier, Ali and I didn't have the heart to wake you up,," said Brother Indra, making me embarrassed.

"I'll go there first, Bro. I want to see the patient," I said goodbye after we finished preparing the injection for the patient.

Brother Indra nodded. I stood up from where I was and curiously headed for room nine to see the patient.

I couldn't stop my heart from beating when I entered room nine. After making small talk with the patient caretaker, I immediately approached the middle-aged woman who was sleeping with her back to me. Her daughter said her mother had a heart attack and her condition is now improving after receiving treatment in the ER earlier.

I took a deep breath and my body seemed to freeze when the middle-aged woman turned her body and her pale face began to appear to me. I almost screamed but I quickly restrained myself by covering my mouth.

"Humph.."

I looked at the woman's face and was very relieved when I saw that the woman's face was not the face of the woman who lay here last night. That means last night's incident was just a dream even though it seemed so real. I can't imagine what if the dream was real, just looking at Ali I'm sick of it, how can I live my life with him? What we have will be noisy every day.

After talking with the patient and his family, I returned to the nurse's room and saw that Ali was already there and ready to take the patients' vital signs.

"From where?" he asked coldly.

"Room nine," I don't know why I was so nervous when I answered, at a glance I saw a strange glint in Ali's eyes but only for a moment because then Ali's eyes turned cold as before. He immediately walked out of the nurse's station and I followed him and asked the patient's vital sign notebook to record it while he measured it.

We went around the patients' rooms to measure their vital signs while asking for their felt. Ali seemed friendly and very caring when he asked questions to patients and their families, this attitude was very different from his cold and sarcastic attitude towards me. I recorded the results of the examination and the complaints of the patients without saying much. I also feel lazy to ask the patient and his family because Ali has done everything.

After walking around, we returned to the nurse's station and entered the results of the examination and the patient's complaints into the patient's medical record, after which we were ready to give drugs and injections to patients who received them.

After distributing the morning medicine, we prepared for the shift with the morning staff. Ali and I were both lost in our own thoughts. There was no conversation between us, Ali leaned back in his chair with his eyes closed listening to music through his headphones. Ms. Atikah was in the bathroom, Ms. Anya was finishing the report so she didn't sneer at us while Brother. Indra was somewhere else.
