Seated at his desk that backed the large window looking over the city, shirt sleeves rolled up, flipping over his pen while he looked over the paper on top of the stack of four. Hearing, his phone on speaker, what she was saying but not listening, not in the last few seconds since he checked the time and found he had a few minutes left till his next meeting. He did not notice when she stopped talking but she knew he was no longer listening. Seconds passed and she spoke, a new topic. “Holidays are coming up.”

“Hm?” Pulled back in by Beatrice’s mesmerizing voice. The first thing, like many others like him, that pulled her to him. He is nothing special in that regard.

“The children.” After years together, she knew exactly how to get his attention back to her. Especially when his mind is on something else. “School, holiday, vacation.”
