Chapter Thirty — What Have We Done!? (2)

In Neruize

It was very deep and cold in the midnight when the crunching sound of a pair of boots walking on the snowy road was heard together with the agonizing cries of two teenage girls in a very deep ditch. Jemima was ambling aimlessly with a large bowl of popcorn in her left hand and a cup of juice in her right hand. She was humming a familiar tune. It was obvious that she was coming back from the cinema.

"Help! Help!" Agonizing cries were heard faraway in the deep chilly night.

"What did I just hear? It seems like someone is calling for help…or the person is in trouble!" Jemima thought to herself.

She thought so deeply and began to ask herself puerile questions, "What if it's a ploy by some brigands? Am I hallucinating? Am I dreaming?"

In less than a second, she started tracing the source of the agonizing cries only to get to an isolated dumpsite. Wandering with confusion and qualms etched in her heart, the agonizing cries got louder and louder. After wandering for so long in the dumpsite, there was a very deep dark creepy ditch where trashes and refuses were dumped. Two sweet teenage girls were screaming for help.

"Somebody help us!"

"Help please! Anyone! Anybody!"

Jemima was wondering why those two teenage girls were inside a dark ditch.

"Just rescue them and save yourself the thoughts!" She smacked herself. Without wasting a second, she dashed to the ditch. The ditch was very deep and her feeble hands couldn't reach the girls.

"Just…just a minute, I'll be…be back, o-okay?" Jemima stuttered fretfully. The coldness wasn't helping matters at all. It was like everything was working against her, even the weather too.

While she was wandering in the dumpsite, she saw thick heavy ropes so she took one of the ropes to the ditch. Tying up one end at a very tall pole and tossing the other end to the girls in the ditch, the girls climbed up and out of harm's way. They breathed an air of relief 'cause they have been stuck in the ditch for more than two weeks with no food or water, nobody to talk to, nobody to rescue them at all. The trash men didn't help in rescuing them instead they threw more trashes and refuses at them. They expressed their gratitude to Jemima and they saw her as their liberator.

Jemima was very confused and sorry seeing them like that. They looked so scraggy, isolated, tattered and hungry. Jemima didn't notice when they grabbed her popcorn and juice and gulped them down in one go. She was just lost seeing them in their desolate condition.

One of the teenage girls had straight waist length cherry pink hair. Her hair was half packed in a bun and the rest falling at her back. Few strands were left behind her ears. Her eyes were glistening malachite green in color and her skin was pale. It looked like she had been crying but all the same she was really beautiful but also looking so unhealthy and feeble. She was Kitty, one of The Sunset Flirts.

And the other teenage girl had kinky copper red hair that reached her shoulders. Her eyes were the color of honey. She looked like a blondish-redhead but startlingly, she emitted the traits of a Betyrian though she was not pureblooded like Shelbie.

At then, they looked scrawny and lean like they have not eaten for more than a week. Jemima gawked at them, her purple eyes dilating and gazillion thoughts racing in her mind.

"What are you girls doing here?" She managed to ask even though she was still troubled. "You are supposed to be at home, with your parents and siblings or having a peaceful night sleep?"

"Ha-ha! This is our home and we live here." Came forth a slinky voice. It was Kitty. "You're supposed to be the one at your own house, in your comfy bed, having a peaceful night sleep, right?" Kitty asked further and Dawn nodded in support. There was a flash of anger in her voice but Jemima didn't notice it at all.

"What!" Jemima busted out. "You girls live here?" The gazillion thoughts that were racing in her little mind augmented to innumerable.

The Sunset Flirts nodded and Jemima could only open her mouth in shock. How can these two beautiful and sickly sweet girls be living in a dumpsite and they called it their home. How heartbreaking!

"Why are you girls here, in the dumpsite?" Jemima asked yet again. It was dangerous for one to be in a dumpsite or outside the home at night, especially in a besmirched society like Neruize. "It's dangerous!"

Dawn simpered, "Tu-quo-que! It's dangerous outside especially in a corrupted place like Neruize. You're supposed to be at home, sleeping peacefully in your comfy bed. What are you doing here?" She was talking as if the dumpsite was their home and it was really their home, Jemima was not supposed to be here.

"I was coming from the cinema and I heard your girls screaming so loudly." Jemima replied. "I was right there at the 'Square Street' hearing agonizing cries from the dumpsite. Do you girls know how far it is but your sickly sweet voices can cover that scope?" She further explained.

Kitty smiled awkwardly, "Let's leave that aside, I'm Kathleen Filotz but you can call me Kitty for short. I love it when people call me Kitty not Kathleen."

The other girl who was a blondish-redhead replied dourly, "My name is Dawn Legnani."

'Kitty and Dawn were their names.' Jemima was amazed with their names, "Lovely names though. I am Jemima Stephenson. You can just call me Jems for short, my BFFs call me that."

"What is BFFs?" One of the Sunset Flirts. Kitty belched after asking that question and that was when Jemima found out that the girls ate her popcorn and drank her juice. She didn't mind that after all.

"BFF means Best Friends Forever." Jemima grinned.

The taciturn Dawn could only smile when Jemima grinned. "You're so friendly and lovely. I like your personality."

"Thanks." Jemima muttered.

And that was how the three girls knew each other till Jemima left Hamill Dayle High School. After Jemima left the high school, the Sunset Flirts enrolled in Hamill Dayle High School but they didn't know that Jemima once schooled there.

Kitty who was still seating at a corner with her feeble hands holding the sides of her head quickly opened her weak eyes. Those sickly sweet emerald green eyes of hers were glistening with unshed tears. Her mouth was too worn-out to spit out the bitter truth.

She craned her neck to see the taciturn Dawn staring penetratingly at her. "What's wrong with you? Why are you holding your head as if it's heavy? Are you suffering from migraine?" She became a bit emotional.

"It's not it! It's just that we committed a very huge mistake." She finally talked after being dumb for a long time.

"Pfft! Mistake? What mistake?" Dawn asked jokily. "We didn't commit any mistake so what the hell are you talking about?"

"That girl…that Jemima…" Kitty spluttered and dragged Dawn to the rendezvous point which was the water fountain that was located in the middle of the school environ and luckily, there was no student there. It was just the two of them there, alone.

Dawn was yelling at the top her voice in anger, "What the fuck is wrong with you? Why the heck are you dragging me like that?"

Kitty: [Anxious & confused] "You don't understand…"

Dawn: [Frantic] "Understand what?!"

Kitty: [Still anxious] ''We have committed a very grave mistake.''

Dawn: [Still frantic but confused] "?!"

Kitty: "We kidnaped Jemima, that girl that saved us back then in Neruize. She helped us out from that ditch, she gave us a new life and made us see reasons why we should keep subsisting no matter what…"

Dawn: [Muddleheaded] "Huh?"

Kitty: [Anxious but angry] "Do you still remember that dumpsite in Neruize? That place where the trash men threw us in! That deep dark creepy ditch! Those hurtful memories!"

Dawn: [Bleakly recalls some memories after forcing herself to remember. Recalls the heavy thick rope which they used for escaping, the popcorn and the juice, the dark deep creepy ditch, the dumpsite and a blurry but cheery average-height figure that had pastel purple eyes and ash blonde hair]

Kitty: [Still pestering Dawn] "Do you still remember her?" [Dawn was totally wrecked and she nodded finally]

Dawn: [Still bleak] "Yeah. She helped us from that ditch and gave us a new life as you said."

Kitty: [Furious and suddenly explodes] "Don't you get it you damn bitch, she's the girl!" [Points her hand to god knows where]

Dawn: "Who?!"

Kitty: "The girl we kidnaped. She's the girl, the one who saved us. Her name is Jemima Stephenson, I still remember every word she said back then in the dumpsite and that includes her name, Jemima Stephenson!!"

Dawn: [Awestruck] "Holy moly! What?! What the fuck have we done? We have indeed committed a very grave mistake!" [Holds her head in shock and her eyes pop out in surprise]

Kitty: [Suddenly bursts out] Yeah! What Have We Done!?
