Sometimes when we expect things to happen they don't. Some minuscule like a family member not filling the coffee pot with water when it was their turn too. Or some larger ones, like dividends of pay after a collaborative job not being fulfilled as agreed upon. But this expectation I had. One that would've shaped my entire future. One I would have based my ability to save and protect those around me on. Has fallen short, completely missed target, crushed my fantasy of power being handed to me and instead, it threw reality at me then gave the middle finger.
"Sorry, kids it's not gonna happen."
Let's start from the beginning.
~10 Minutes Prior~~
We're sitting outside the doctor's office right now. Izuku and I are pumped to see what our quirks will be. Of course, I know he'll be quirkless but that doesn't mean I'll ruin his fantasy myself. I also wouldn't be able to explain how I know that he'd be quirkless and that wouldn't make sense unless I have some quirk that lets me see the future. Oh just thinking about what I could have gets me all giddy.
Anyway, my studies involving self-defense have come a long way. I haven't performed any of the techniques but I have memorized the necessary procedures to defend myself given certain situations. An example would be the disarming of knives or simple pressure points to render people unconscious. Something I want to do is enter a dojo of some kind. If I had to choose then I'd go into Taekwondo as the training not only helps in the physical sense but also the mental.
It's mostly emphasized in head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. I'm sure there are also other martial art styles I could adapt to given the time and accessibility. Oh, if I get a quirk involving learning speed or adaptability that would be perfect! Katsuki got his quirk a few weeks ago and you can already see his ego-inflating, as he's been speaking in a derogatory way to others already. Of course, I don't put up with his shit and we haven't gotten violent, but the minute he puts his hand on Izuku or calls him worthless I am going to kick his as-
"Izuku and Jackal Midoriya?" Some nurse says to us. "My name is Lilith Cho and I'll be guiding you to Doctor Kyudai." She looks down at us while we stand. I notice she looks quite sad when staring at us but I brush it off as she may have found out Izuku is quirkless. It's quite possible she has seen his toe x-ray and understand studies previously made. My mom is behind us as our footsteps echo in the surprisingly noiseless hall. Then after a few minutes of sullen silence gone unperturbed, we reach office number 221.
When she knocks you can hear a soft rapping-like noise permeate the previous silence and after a few seconds, we hear a soft-"Come in," from the other side of the door. When entering I notice two x-rays of toes on the right side of the wall. Behind the door are a variety of magazines and other commodities. On the left side of the room, we see a large leather bed with a piece of white paper sheet over it. Then in the middle back of the room we see him, Doctor Kyudai Garaki. As of right now, he is looking down at a clipboard. This is the same doctor in league with one of the most notorious villains ever, All For One. To his right is a computer with documents and text I can't care enough to decipher. Huh, it seems that doctor's offices haven't changed from my previous world even though it's like 200 years in the future.
As we sit down and my mom stands behind us, I catch a glimpse of the nurse's back as she closes the door. As the door shuts Dr. Kyudai looks up from his board and says "Sorry kids it's not gonna happen." Izuku freezes and drops his All Might figurine in pure shock at this unexpected discovery. I too am frozen in shock at his choice of words. "Kids", as in plural. Before I can continue this train of thought I am interrupted by him speaking to my mom.
"Both Izuku and Jackal should have already manifested one of these quirks or a combination of both but after viewing their x-rays I don't think they're going to." he continues and shifts his view to our feet x-rays on the side of the wall. "When doctors discovered a link between the bones in a person's foot and their likelihood of developing a quirk. People with powers have only one joint in their pinky toe." Midway through his explanation, my mom looks towards the x-rays herself, with a variety of emotions expressed through her facial features. The most prominent one being shock.
"It shows here they have two joints in their pinky. Like roughly twenty percent of the population these days. Based on the research that's available it's safe to say both your sons aren't going to develop a quirk." He finishes delivering the devastating news.
The ride home after this visit felt eternally long. Even with almost all the lights being green, and only being 20 minutes away it was still suffocatingly long. I believe Izuku feels the same as just the day before he was watching an old video of All Might starstruck, exclaiming "When I get my quirk, I'm gonna be a hero just like him!"
Holding his All Might figurine tightly in his hands, it looks like his dreams have been crushed. I knew this would have happened at least to him, but experiencing this feeling myself has made me feel like every hardship I've ever had before was merely small fragments of life burdening me, and now they've dropped a boulder on me.
Huh, I guess I need to learn martial arts and different styles of fighting in order to have a chance at surviving in this world. Let's hope I make it past graduation this time.
