So today, novelupdates recommended me this novel with a 1.3-star rating.

Who knows? It might be a hidden gem.

In the first chapter, our MC is being sold out for an arranged marriage. Drugged by her scheming mother and sister, she couldn't escape from the bridal sedan chair, thus burning alive. Therefore, she got a straight ticket to the past.

Yay, hurray for revenge!

In the second chapter, MC was attending a "Flower fairy festival" in the palace. (A competition between young maidens.) Barely five minutes after her reincarnation, some random chicks were already looking for some trouble. Knowing the future, MC wanted to prevent her face from being destroyed by a cat. She sent the cat at her sister and backed up behind a bush to watch the show an whoala, she pumped into a hard chest, aka ML. (Her previous to be husband.)

What was ML doing behind the bush?

.

.

.

.

To add to his mysteriousness, ML is an iceberg general, who wears a mask?! How cute! A cold martial artist allowing an unfamiliar woman to bump into his chest? I'd guess he is scheming something (my wishful thinking). He was fascinated by how she counterattacked her sister's cat attack and praised MC for being very smart. (In his mind, of course.)

Most of the women in the festival had ill intentions towards the MC. Due to being a commoner's daughter, they made fun of her background.

MC silenced them with this: "Miss Shangguan, you focus much on family background, but you do not know that the peace and prosperity in the capital are given by those soldiers who have ordinary family backgrounds. Miss Shangguan, all people are born equal."

Sounds good to people in 21. century. But would it sound good to others? For example, an empress or emperor, who are viewed as gods? Even Confucian would scowl at this girl. There were no words about MC being a modern woman, so I have no idea where she came up with this equality thingy. But overall, her comebacks were very decent.

At the banquet, we met a prince (a wolf in sheep clothing). He got interested in the MC because she was the only girl who looked coldly at him.

My question is:

Why don't other girls, except the MC, try to play hard too?

One accident after another kept happening. We are seven chapters in, and the competition with our MC participating still didn't begin! The empress, concubines, guards stole all her screen time...

Finally! Our MC's time to shine! She had to draw out a bamboo stick from a tube. When I saw what she picked up, I was like...whaaaaaat?!?!?!

No way!

That's impossible!

[Blindfolded embroidery.]

So Coool!

People who were on MC's side (The empress) was impressed with her finished product, while her enemies (emperor's favorite concubine) tried to find fault with the MC.

Dear concubine, what did the MC do to you?! Don't you have enough enemies? Why asking for more?

If it were a few years ago, where revenge was my cup of tea, I'd continue reading.

Pros:

- The plot seems interesting for revenge lovers.

- MC is not the most exceptional beauty. She is calm and collected. Except her knowledge of future, there are no deus-ex machina cheats so far. *Cough, cough* Ehm, I dunno what to think about the blindfolded embroidery, but it piqued my interest, so I'll let it pass.

(I have no problem with OP cheats. As long as they don't overshadow the MC, I'm fine with anything.)

- Proper grammar and lovely descriptions

Cons:

- A bit cliche for those familiar with this genre. I almost fell asleep during some scenes.

- In the first chapter, the narrative switches between first and third person.

- Sometimes I couldn't differentiate between conversations and thoughts.

- ML is the favorite, ice cube general.

- Generic antagonists (Mother and daughter duo)

This novel deserves more than 1.3 stars!
