Deceit And Promises

"Nah, don't mind me. I found it amusing that even after having a sight with the lady, you still get dragged along," I said, giggling.

Bryan shook his head in disappointment. He then looked at me while extending a hand outwards for a handshake. I looked at him with a puzzled look.

"Those were some interesting stories you've told me... And I like how you think and handle missions. So I'll try it and work with you during the next mission. And please, no backstabbing... I don't want to fight my comrades unnecessarily," explained the Slayer.

I gladly grasped it and shook with glee. The bond level for Bryan within my vision increased by a total diamond. Even making promises would result in getting bond points, not just by entering matches or doing quests. I hope there won't be any drawbacks if I don't fulfill the promise.

"Notice. If you do not fulfill a promise, the bond level for Slayer Verna will drop to zero."

Ah, that was the drawback. In a game, that would be a drastic demerit. But, in the physical world, it would be expected. Once a promise gets broken, it is hard to make it up to them. Because you've not only severed the contract, you've shattered the trust the person had with you.

The world isn't kind, so I had expected promises to be broken. But, unfortunately, I've also had my fair share of people making empty pacts with me only to turn their back against me. I was sick of it, and I stopped accepting promises. I didn't trust anyone but myself.

If the mission calls for it, even the closest friends will soon have their heads pinned under my shoe. After some time, the tables have turned to make me the bad guy. A backstabber, as most would say. But I don't care for those who think they are superior to others.

And I don't think all targets were monsters. They were just the harmful outcomes of the world. And I was there to set them straight about how unfair and unjust the world can be. It was unlucky for them to have met the person who hired me or me.

I would use 'promise' lightly like it didn't mean anything. It was so easy to gain trust from people that it seemed like a laughing stock for me. But keep in mind that the people I betray are those who deserved it, in my opinion, at the very least. I don't just go around killing people.

I have a purpose when I do so. Most of the targets are sadistic monsters—the lowest scum on the planet, the bottom fragger of the food chain. I dare say that insects were better than them. Bryan was right; I used my innocent features to take what I wanted.

You can call me deceitful, but don't we all do so? Everyone has their masks. Each person has a persona when talking to different sets of people. And many others do the same thing as me. It's even come to the point that dishonesty was the mainstream thing to do.

Lying was as easy as breathing for some. The most corrupt people have found a way to twist the truth into lies. I use it to sniff out the trash of society. Those that have wronged me or others. Most of my targets have not met me until I've set my sights on them.

Sometimes their reasoning for doing such horrible things makes sense. But I do not care. I don't show mercy for those who beg for their lives like they didn't do anything wrong. It disgusts me to the core.

"So tell me, what's the objective of the Major mission?" I asked, sitting beside the Slayer.

"We have to head up to the Briton Domain. Duchess Vernice Midford has requested my help, unaware I've changed from the Five Kings to the Arks. But I owe her since she taught me how to run while shooting a pistol, so I am going to her aid. The place we are going is..."

Bryan seemed tongue-tied while he thought about the next mission's location. Was it that bad? At this point, I was trying to remember what was next arc after the Orphanage Training arc. I am sure that the Words Of the World annoyed me with my thoughts.

I mean, if Bryan had already faced the horrors of the Red Light District arc and continued training with Tomoe... Then the next one shouldn't be that bad. Not to mention the guy was also training the five prodigies for a whole three months.

If the Slayer could brave through all that, another principal mission would be another stick in the haystack. But, things could still change for the worse.
