Double-Edged Sword

When everything settled down, all three of us were standing in the open field with snow hailing the skies. The faint sound of blood dripping was deafening, so I looked around to see if I could find any open wounds. But to my shock, it was Mavislin's hand that was bleeding.

The conversion of Elements must have stressed her blood vessels too much.

"There's a reason why I don't use this spell often. A double-edged sword since I am supposed to be a Light Elemental being. Nonetheless, it was effective against your two spells. I wouldn't have beaten Elizabeth's attack without that fence."

Huh? Wait... Are you saying my spell was already more than enough to cause your defeat? And that Vincent's spell was downgrading my Lostbelt's power?

"What do you mean? With our combined efforts, we could only make your arm bleed! So how can you say that my spell would have overpowered yours?" I questioned.

"The same way it reduced my Monody's attack power, the same effect it had on your spell. If you want to pull off that stunt again, I suggest you don't release it until the fence shatters. From what I saw, the snowy attack was the one that caused the barrier to break and clash with my arrows. "

Ah, that made sense too. Vincent remained silent as he clenched his fists. I quickly went up to the fella and rested a hand on his shoulder.

"It was only a trial, so you don't have to get too worked up. Besides, you tanked that spell like a Tigereal against a squishy... Whatever hero you can think of! The point is, you did well to defend the attack to negate some of its strength."

Vincent smiled at my comparison and relaxed while Mavislin snapped her fingers, causing the area to return to its lush green form. Then, a faint clapping sound rang out from the entrance of the meadow. It was the Grand Admiral! And he looked like death had asked him for lunch today.

"Bravo! I never thought the Old Chapel would have another blizzard since I stopped training the youngsters, but I was wrong! That was the Castle of Romanova and the final version of it before the soon-to-be Grand Duchess and her family were brutally murdered by the opposing forces."

"But I must ask you, young Lizzie... How did you get your powers?" asked Z, staring at me.

The Galaxian Mage didn't seem to care that a member of the Mafia was standing beside me as he asked that question. Vincent had to clear his throat while I couldn't make heads or tails about what Z was saying.

"You've got something you want to say, Vinny?" asked the Galaxian Mage, craning his neck to look at Vincent.

"Are you not going to question my presence here?"

"Do I have to? Because I don't want to start a fight after getting my backhauled through the seven levels of the Abyss. In fact, my spine had already called it quits by the fourth level. So, no, I don't want to bother you right now."

"If you are standing here, someone allowed you in, so I will not care. My only focus is Lizzie over here, who summoned the snowy mountains of a lost family from Russia, which shouldn't be possible unless she can manipulate Time and Space."

"Wait, I thought everyone's Original Spells could bypass the Timelines? I've seen Duncan and Vincent use spells of other times and from myths... Why are you only questioning me?" I asked, confused.

Mavislin sighed while she walked over to Z's side.

"The spells that they use are all from the past. Even if they are from myths, the legends are dated back before civilization took proper form, when the Age of Gods was still a thing."

"With them gone from Humanity's lives, the only way to show they were here was to pass down their heroic deeds via legends and myths. And the more famous the legend, the more powerful the spell."

"Human Mages have the gift of using their ancestors and gods to boost their strength while we rely on our old homes' heroes and tales. Ever notice that?"

Now that I thought about it... Z made sense. I was still based on the novel, but so far, with everything I've encountered, Z had a solid point about the Mages using legends from old. Duncan, Bryan, and Sir Velvet used different tales from Earth's history.

At the same time, other Mages from the other planets, such as Mavislin, were using their home planet's history in their spells.

The only exception was probably Gillian, who has access to the entire Universe's legends and can freely use what he wants so long as he can get it to form a proper chant.
