Chapter 2
Jan 6th, 2018
Spending an entire year apart from Jamie was possibly the most difficult thing that Jennie had ever done. Especially how they left things the previous year.
Of course they kept constant contact over the phone put it was never the same as having him close to her. She would only be in college for 3 more years and then she can see him everyday again.
Jamie stood in the bathroom of 'The Groove' adjusting his collar. He had to look perfect.
Why?
He had absolutely no idea.
But he just felt a strong sense to look put together after he hasn't seen Jennie in a whole year. He was never going to admit to her how much he's been struggling with since her sudden absence in his life.
This was going to be his last year in college and approximately 4 years until he will supposedly believe Jennie's confession of love.
He pondered the entire year as to why he would say something so stupid to her. Why the hell had he suggested that she should wait until she's older?!
Of course Jamie was in love with her too. But he had been a major coward and completely chickened out.
You see... Jamie has what you call 'commitment issues'. After his father left him and his mother shortly after his birth, returned for two years and then left again only to never return he had been recluse about letting people in, in fear that they would leave him, just like his father did.
He didn't want to extend this kind of security on Jennie but he had to be sure. Even if she has been there for him since she was born. Literally.
Jamie had made the executive decision that he's going to move back to his home town after college to start a business here. That way he could live near The Groove, where he'd get to see Jennie every year until she finished college.
Yeah it was a great plan.
The best even.
He stepped out of the men's room and was taken aback to see Jennie sitting at their usual booth. She was early.
For the first time ever Jennie was actually on time. She looked and smiled brightly at him. The kind of smile that seemed to make the world stop for a few seconds.
She got up and embraced him a hug which he returned with my fervor. She giggled in his chest and the noise seemed to make his heart sky rocket to the moon.
Jennie however felt relieved that he was here. When she walked in the diner and found their booth empty she almost had a heart attack thinking that he didn't come because of what she said on this very day last year.
Although they may have been apart for a year, her feelings for him still remained the same. She was going to love him if it's the last thing she does.
After a lengthy hug then finally separated and Mrs Wentworth brought them their all time usual. Even if they both hadn't been there in a year.
They started light conversation, catching up and eventually feel into their usual routine. After their meal they had both laughed their hearts out and were completely fulfilled.
"You know... I still love you."
Jamie's heart lurched but in a good way that made his insides all warm. He thought about responding and calling this whole five year thing off but was cut off when Jennie's phone buzzed.
She took it out and checked it only for a look of dread to pass over her face. She looked up at Jamie sadly and smiled.
"It's my mom. I have to head home and help her with something before I fly back later tonight."
There was a voice screaming in Jamie's head, telling him to confess his feelings, to say something... Anything.
"Have a safe trip"
He croaked and mentally slapped himself. He supposed he deserved it. Jennie got up and kissed his cheek and hugged him one last time before disappearing out the door.
Jamie felt a strong erge to run out there and beg for her forgiveness or something but he stayed rooted in his seat and for the life of it he regretted it more than anything in the world.
Well there's always next year, he thought grimly.
