Let us go get married

Abigail turned slightly and looked at her grandfather carefully. She had not realised in the three months since he had brought her back, that he had aged and was not looking as healthy as he did.

Slowly turning back, she realised that, like her grandmother, he was the only other person who cared for her unconditionally. In that moment she realised that she could not do a thing that would jeopardise his health and cut this life unnecessarily short.

As she looked directly at Daniel, she paid attention to the man who stood in front of her. From her memory he was twenty-five, and was willing to sacrifice his ability, at least for a period, to find the love of his life for a woman he barely knew.

She observed the direction that he was looking in and noticed the caring and concerned look that was on his face as he observed her grandfather. It told her, that it was more than respect he felt for her grandfather, he cared about the man, and was happy to do whatever he could to help him, without and real expectation of a reward or even that this would be anything other than a marriage of convenience for three years.

Quietly, just so Daniel could hear Abigail said "I do not know…"

Daniel reached over and took Abigail's hand. A he did so, he felt a wave of pleasure sweep through him but restraining himself from reacting too much of the feel of it in his hand, and as calmly as he could said "It is your choice. If you do not know, then we do not get married."

Hearing the sincerity in Daniel's words, Abigail slightly pulled her hand, before saying, "Can I have a couple of minutes before I give you, my answer?"

Daniel nodded, and as he let go of her hand, he calmly said "I will go and wait for you with your grandfather."

Abigail calmly said "Thank you. Can you tell my grandfather, so he does not worry, that I just want to call the lawyers office to check something on the letter he showed me and let him know I have the number."

Once Daniel was out of earshot, Abigail quickly dialled the number of the chief partner she had saved in her phone, and after three rings it was answered, and she heard "Chen Chang's office."

"Can you please tell Lawyer Chang, that Abigail Meng needs to have a quick word with him."

The secretary said "Yes Miss Meng. He told me to expect your call. I will transfer you, but please accept my best wishes for your birthday."

Abigail heard the on-hold noise, and less than twenty seconds later, she heard "Miss Meng, such a pleasure to hear from you. How can I help you?"

Quietly, Abigail said "Lawyer Chang, your firm provided my grandfather with advice as to some documents on my behalf?"

"As soon as I heard who it was for, I reviewed the documents, Miss Meng. When your grandmother approached me to establish the company and the trust, I made her a promise that I will do what I can to protect your interests. What is your concerns?"

"Your view of them?"

"Other than a couple of clauses, about allowing you to ask for a divorce any time after three years and Daniel Wu being compelled to agree without hesitation and the penalties attached to it, it is stock standard. Anything you have before the marriage, inherit or are given before the marriage or during it, remain yours. And you cannot touch anything that Daniel Wu comes in with. Plus there are the usual provisions if you have children…"

Abigail sighed, before saying "I was worried about the company."

"If the protections I would want that were not in the agreement I would have made sure they were." There was a slight pause and Lawyer Chang said, "Do you mind me asking what is happening?"

"My grandfather is proposing that I marry Daniel Wu…"

"An arranged marriage. Miss Meng, despite what people will tell you to your face, in the upper echelons of society, elders do attempt to arrange the marriages of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with others in the same level of society. Just take my words in, do not agree if you are not comfortable with marrying Daniel Wu. Protect yourself, and I will do anything else that you need me to do."

Abigail, slightly smiled before saying "Thank you for that. I just needed an independent voice to tell me the choice is mine."

"Miss Meng, you know it is always a pleasure being the voice of reason for you. Just remember when you can in the next few days come into the office and we can sign the necessary documents for the finalisation of the Transfer, but the MayTay Toy Company is, as of today. Now, go and enjoy what is left of your birthday."

Before Abigail could respond, the call was ended. Feeling confident in her decision, Abigail walked over to her grandfather and Daniel, before saying to Daniel, "Shall we go and get married?"
