Chapter 3

Author note: I wanted to mention that the story will switch between third person and First-person! Also, I was listening to thunderstorms while writing this, so it's gonna be pretty rainy this chapter.

"Officer Cambel"

"yes?" I replied not looking up from the report I was almost finished with, gods I hate filing reports, the worst part of the job.

"Chief Marshal wants to see you in her office."

"tell her ill be there in a second, I have to finish this report." I said to him and mumbled under my breathe "before this becomes another thing she yells at me for"

"I don't advice that she seems mad" was the reply

I sigh setting the feather pen down "When is she not mad" I say standing up from my desk taking my eyes off the report.

"when she not talking to you it seems" The blonde-haired male joked

I glared at him and walked away towards the office without another word, to get to her office I had to walk straight past all the desks of my fellow soldiers and it seemed like everyone knew why I was called there exact me cause they couldn't keep their mouths shut as an I walked by and made several comments"

"looks like your the dog house now!"

"it's a miracle you still have your job!"

"you better pray to the gods this isn't your last day!"

I ignored them, they were just a bunch of washed-up soldiers who were jealous of my wealth and skill. think just cause I work here, that somehow we were on the same level now, I opened the office door and walked in closing it behind me. The Chief was a beautiful woman, her light brown skin glowed under the sunlight coming through the window, her grey eyes usually cold and sharp but today was filled with annoyance after just looking at me.

she had long curly hair that was tied in a ponytail, the black glasses eating on the bridge of her nose. she wasn't a petite woman by any means, even though the black shirt she was wearing you can clearly see them.

"Do you know why I called you here, Cambel?" She asked calmly but her eyes showed annoyance

"No, not at all but i would love for you to tell me" I smiled bitterly

"well, I got a report from Senior Guard Miller that you went after the criminals and lost them after getting in a fight then losing to a civilian," She said raising an eyebrow "is that right Officer Cambel?"

that's was a huge blow to my pride, that damn guy was clearly winging it but I lost in a fight to that him. im sure I would have won if he didn't throw dirt in my eyes and run away, either way, it ended up in me losing them.

"We were lucky enough to get an Anonymous tip that a murder was gonna take place, you were prepared for this yet, you failed" she was mocking me at this point she loved seeing me annoyed and angry " I guess you aren't as good as you say"

i couldn't defend myself against failing no matter how hard I wanted to, it was true I did fail to catch them but I'm confident in my skills as a swordsman and I know it's better than anyone in this building.

"Let's not forget that I am the beat swordsman you have in this place" I started letting a cocky grin settle onto my face "let's not forget I attended the best academy's in the kingdom and graduated full marks, that enough should prove I'm capable"

Chief Marshal rolled her eyes at my statement "even so the escaped convicts are a problem, if you really wanna prove your talent you'll find them and this person assisting them" she took a file out from one of her desk drawers and slide it over to me.

I walked over and grabbed it "What's this?" I asked having an idea of what's in it

"it's the file on our criminals, the Adventures guide was reluctant to hand it over but in the end, they couldn't go against the law" she responded her tone bored "read it and see if you'll find anything, remember this is a solo case"

I started back to the door and eight before I closed it she said "lets if you can prove your worth to me, Officer Cambel" with that I closed the door.

"what's with all the rain?" I said looking out the window of Aiden's house "it's raining hard out there"

"if it was up to me, we would be at home snuggled under the sheets" Ron sighed his head resting on top of his hand.

I turn back to him, I decided to plop down beside him on the couch while Aiden still sat in the Armchair quite. I yawned feeling sleepy from the rain and bored of the long wait, if Aiden going to join us or not? I wouldn't blame him if it was a no after all who's to say we don't kill that woman plus the king speech Ron gave yesterday was a lot alone.

"Alright ill join you" Aiden suddenly said looking up at us

"Fantastic! n-" Ron was interrupted

"wait wait, on one condition" Aiden quickly said, "what did you guys do to get the Guards on you?"

"We were frames actually" I spoke up "we are mercenaries, someone sought us out for help under our aliases Jonathan and Rosette, wanting us to go deliver a message and it turned out to be a setup. the girl was dead when we got there and we were. found at the scene"

"who's hate you enough to set you up?" he asked

we both shrugged "Honestly, we don't know" I said leaning back into Ron

"Sure we have a fair share of people who don't like us, but nothing that bad to frame us for murder"

"I mean it hard to be someone with a lot of power and influence, I never been into the whole mercenary thing but even I heard they keep the information of their workers under wraps"

"We thought so to but I don't remember anyone of high states hating us let alone knowing we exist, we all know how the high-class act" Ron Grunted snaking his arm around my shoulder

"Well, to get your names cleared we have to think of something"

"We can go to the mercenary guild and try to find some clues" I suggested just trying to throw some ideas around

"Yeah, but wouldn't they take you to the guards?" Aiden asked confused leaning back in his chair

"Nah, the mercenary guild gives work to criminals all the time" I stated waving off his question

"Alright, then let's head to the Mercenary Guild," Ron said standing to take me with him

"Wait! I'm the rain!" I exclaimed, don't get me wrong I love the rain but I would rather not be soaked to the bone

"Yeah, why not? the rain would make good cover" He said stopping at the door before turning to Aiden who was now also standing up "Do you have anything to cover us from the rain and other unsavory characters?"

"you lucky I keep spares" Aiden sighed walking out of sight and yelling out to us "not sure if you guys would for it though"

__

We were outside the mercenary guild, Ron having a calm expression on, I couldn't tell what he was thinking and me my face looked calm to but my heart was hammering in my chest, I don't know how this would end up. Aiden was clearly nervous he was constantly looking over his shoulder despite the hood covering his face.

"We can't stand here all day, let's go" Ron stepped forward opening the door, both of us followed behind him.

I guess the quicker we figure out who frames has the better, I would hate to have to live the rest of my days on the run.
