Mrs. Phellipe twisted a turn. Slowly. Calculatedly. Her features turned blank as she pitched her gaze on Louisa. "What was that you said?" she asked, walking back to where Louisa stood with her head bowed. "I don't know why you said that, but I certainly heard you say it——"

She stopped in front of Louisa, needing more confirmation of what she'd said. With the sun hung like a fury in the sky, it caused her skin to itch and burn despite her clothing.

Louisa would not yet look her in the face. "Tell me what you meant by—"

"What I said?" Louisa cut in, lifting her head. Her mundane brown eyes now shone with honey-coloured flecks in them. Her emotions may be the reason for it, but the sun's hue could have also contributed to that. "I know what I said," Louisa steadied her stare upon the woman, "I didn't expect you to hear it but I was never pregnant, Mrs. Phellipe. It's true. I never was."

"You lied!—" yelled Mrs. Phellipe, "to him!???"
