Chapter 104

There was sliced cold meat, apple, and cheese on the plate. The meat made my stomach uneasy. She watched my face, and suddenly lifted the meat from the main plate onto a side plate and replaced it with a roll of fire-cooked bread. She took the plate of meat to the exterior door. As she opened the flap, I saw that the other female servant was waiting there between the two soldiers that guarded the entrance.

I broke the camp bread apart and ate the fluffy interior. The exterior crust was often gritty with ash and I had learnt not to eat the skin of the roll as a result. The bread helped settle my stomach. I ate the cheese and apple and felt better for it. The goblet contained a cold mint tea.

Ashara watched me eat and drink with approval. “Good,” she decided. “I will lay out your clothes for today and then have Mesandre come to do your hair once you are dressed for your journey.”
