"So grim," I rolled my eyes. "And so young. I have lived through times that mankind thought were the end of days before, Phantom. These things happen in circles. Times grow hard, resources grow slim, our numbers deplete, and then a balance is re-obtained and there is a time of plenty again. It is always the same – some disease, some drought, some famine will occur when the world becomes unbalanced, until equilibrium is achieved once more."
"Not all of us will live through it," he pointed out.
"No," I agreed, thoughtfully.
"Not all of those we love will live through it," he continued. He took a slice of apple from the tray between us. "I don't know about you, but I think it is time that I set pride aside, and humbled myself to my loved ones, beg for forgiveness if need be."
"Is that so?" I glanced at him. We had never spoken about the source of his curse, the subject too raw for him to go into detail about even after so many years. "Forgiveness, eh?"
