Chapter 306 ( Epitome of Humanity )

Two days had passed since [First Squadron] had been in the hospital. Cloud had made a full recovery and had been discharged, all thanks to his superhuman regeneration, and was currently resting in his room.

"Cloud-sama, Johannes-sama wants to see you" - said a member of [Fenrir] as he called out to the blond from outside the door.

Cloud's eyes shot open, only to narrow his gaze when he heard this - "Ok, I guess I'll have to see what Soma's father wants."

He had discovered the relationship between the [Far East] branch director and his teammate.

Without a second thought, he changed his clothes and walked over to where his superior was, only to frown when he felt someone watching him from the shadows.

"Target is headed to speak with Director Johannes... I proceed to stop following him" - a male voice muttered.

"Affirmative, search his room for anything of use and if possible try to find a DNA sample."

"As you command, sir" - said the man as he disappeared from the scene.

* * * * *

"It's a pleasure to see you accepted my request, Cloud-kun" - Johannes said with a smile as he saw the blond enter his office - "Now please come in."

"Thank you for your hospitality" - Cloud said calmly as he walked to the desk and sat down in front of the chair of the head of the place.

"Well, I feel that we are both somewhat similar and we don't like to beat around the bush, so I'll get straight to the point" - Johannes said with a serious look - "Tell me, Cloud-kun.... What is it that you are?"

". . ." - Cloud was silent as he frowned when he heard this because he didn't expect this answer - "To what do you owe this question?"

"To the fact that not only your physical abilities are superhuman, but your regenerative ability" - Johannes answered seriously as he made a hand movement so that a holographic screen appeared in front of them - "As you can see in this report, the damage you received in that fight against that mutated [Vajra] was so high that you shouldn't have recovered for at least a month thanks to it being direct damage to your nervous system, which didn't happen because you only took a day... that's strange by the way you look at it..."

Cloud was silent when he heard this because there was no way to give a logical meaning to his situation, so he could only do one thing, lie - "I'm human... that I won't deny... and regarding my abilities, I'm honestly not sure because I have no memories outside of being separated from my two companions..."

Johannes frowned when he heard this as he looked down at a small monitor he had hidden, only to notice how Cloud's pulse seemed unchanged, something that proved he wasn't lying - "I see... I guess I'll have to do some more research..."

Cloud just kept silent as he watched his blond companion's reaction.

"By the way, I have received the report that we will have four new members" - Johannes said as he looked at the blond - "Although this is not good news because it is obvious that they are looking for something from us, possibly you so I ask you to be careful."

Cloud frowned when he heard this because it was obvious that Johannes was warning him not to hang around too much with those new recruits - "OK, I'll keep that in mind, thank you very much for advice, Johannes-sama."

"You don't have to thank me, everything I'm doing, is for the good of [Far East]" - smiled Johannes as he looked directly at the blond - "But well, I guess that would be all... you may go"

"Hai" - nodded Cloud as he walked out of the room, not noticing the neutral look the director had in his eyes - "I want you to bring me all the information we have on Cloud, his medical records, his actions during the service, what he had for breakfast.... EVERYTHING."

"As you command, Johannes-sama."

Johannes was silent for a few seconds before making some calls so he could find out more about the people who would be arriving in a few days.

"Done, all the information we have on Cloud Strife has been sent to your computer, Johannes-sama"

"Thanks, keep up the good work" - Johannes replied as he started reading the information - "Let's see... he appeared on December 14th in a city completely destroyed by the attack of an [Aragami] of Rank B. He was discovered in a deplorable state by the then cadet Tachibana Sakuya and her team, he was recovered and treated by the 25th medical squadron, receiving the name [Mystery] for his discovered physical and regenerative abilities. Over time, Cloud Strife was recruited by [Fenrir] and joined the team of Cadet Sakuya and the two Amamiya siblings, Amamiya Tsubaki and Amamiya Lindow, creating a powerful assault team..."

Johannes frowned because he couldn't find much more information outside of mission logs - "I guess I'll have to look in [Fenrir's] central information base... I'm sure I'll find something interesting there..."

[Confidential Information...]

"I knew it..." - Johannes said as he squinted and put in his personal security code, only to see the screen change slightly and images of what appeared to be a laboratory appear.

[Code 24: New Humanity Project (Cancelled)]

"We weren't the only ones..." - Johannes muttered as he frowned when he read the project in front of him - "Their methods were different, but the goal was the same..."

[Project: New Humanity (Cancelled)]

[Goal: To bring a new path for the world during the age of the [Aragami] thanks to the discovery of the human known as Cloud Strife]

"There's even an audio..." - Johannes muttered as he clicked.

"It's a miracle! This DNA is out of this world! His entire genetic chain has been optimized to unimaginable levels! We're not dealing with a human, but a god, a god who has come to earth so he can help humanity move forward!"

". . ." - Johannes frowned when he heard this because as a scientist he didn't believe in divinities, much less one that had left them to their fate with those things roaming the planet.

"The project has been accepted as expected, after all we are about to bring a new era for mankind, all thanks to one guy."

Johannes continued to listen and read the information in front of him, only to shake his head when he got to the final part because he knew the outcome from the beginning.

"Defeat... it's impossible... no matter how hard we try, how much we want to replicate the DNA, how much we want to bring a new era of prosperity for mankind, it's useless. The subject's DNA seems to be impossible to decipher because every time we thought about how we would open one door, two more would appear in front of our eyes. No matter how far we advanced, there was no end to this path. Our higher-ups have decided to abandon the project and concentrate on other more important things, and honestly, I couldn't agree more..."

"This will go down as my biggest failure in the realm of science, so I'll just say one thing for anyone who is curious about the Specimen called Cloud Strife.... be careful, don't try anything stupid against him, because if I learned anything during this investigation, it's that his DNA seems to be constantly evolving. You could say that the Test Subject is the epitome of humanity, an entity that will be able to continue to thrive even if we old humanity goes extinct. I don't know how he came into the world, if he is natural or a product of experimentation, or if there are even more like him, the only thing I can say for sure is that a new race has come into this world, a race that can supplant humanity as the dominant race with just one bloodline, that being said, the High Command asked me what my opinion of the Test Subject is, and I could only answer one thing.... "He is the ultimate destiny of humanity, the ultimate evolution possible for us, so we better not get in the middle of natural selection. Cloud Strife is human, that's what both his body shape, his organs, as well as his structure says , that's why we better let this new era for humanity progress normally..."... I for one... am going to watch closely as the world is changed by just one person..."

- Dr. Richard Hornstein.

"So the one in charge was Richard..." - Johannes muttered as he narrowed his eyes - "That explains why he didn't want to enter our project..."

Johannes was becoming more and more thoughtful about the situation surrounding Cloud, because it was obvious that the mysteries surrounding the young [God Eater], were deeper than he thought.

"If what Richard said is true... then he might be the key to be able to start my personal project" - muttered Johannes while a huge smile appeared on his face - "I guess I'll stay away for a while because I feel that he is very defensive in my presence..."
