CHAPTER 18: The bear.

It didn't take long until the creature arrived. It was a black bear that was fairly large in comparison to others of its species.

The gigantic beast was clearly infected by the disease and had already lost one of its eyes. Not that it mattered much since the zombies already had terrible to no vision.

The beast moved incredibly fast and managed to smack down one of the humans. The man could barely feel his bones getting crushed due to the mass amounts of adrenaline that raced through his veins.

In a desperate but useless attempt to save his life he started to stab the massive paw of the beats.

The creature wailed in pain, but its actions were not hindered by it at all.

The other humans that carried long knives rushed in from behind and tried to cut open the vital spots of the bear. Yet it was to no avail. Its skin was too thick and its muscles too tense.

At this point the bear had already beheaded the human on the ground and everyone retreated to avoid becoming its next target.

"One of you, give me a bow!" Theo commanded. If he managed to shoot an arrow trough the eye socket of the beast it would pierce its brain and thus killing it instantly.

However, no one had time to listen to his words.

Getting tired of this shit Theo rushed in to snatch the bow out of the hands of the man next to him. But the bear noticed his sudden movements and struck them both with its paw.

The man holding the bow now had slashes from its claws all the way from his face all the way to his stomach. The bow had snapped in half, and if not for the fact that the man was still breathing anyone would assume that he was dead.

Theo had it a lot better. Since the man had received most of the impact he was simply flung away. The only thing was that when he landed on his back, he hurt one of his wings, but he was otherwise unharmed.

With a fierce snarl he threw himself against the bear. Blinded by instinct and rage he scratched open a large portion of the upper body of the beast.

Because of this the bear had stopped attacking the humans and now only fought to protect itself. This created more openings for the humans to attack. Yet the two moved too quickly for the archers to properly take aim.

Theo cried out in pain as a misplaced arrow penetrated his left arm. But he didn't have the time to stop his attack.

He bit in the neck of the bear. The warm red blood flowed out of the wound and dripped down Theo's mouth.

Of course, the wound was too small for the bear to actually die. It just hurt a lot.

The bear managed to roll over and throw Theo off with a few quick and unpredictable movements.

Theo landed on all fours. And despite the fact that he dug his claws into the ground to stop the momentum he was still swung a few meters back.

Now that the two were separated for a moment the humans that carried bows immediately shot at the bear.

One of its arms lost most of its power due to various arrows now sticking out of its shoulder. But the bear didn't seem to take notice, and rushed towards Theo.

As the bear approached him, he managed to slide under the beast and tear a large part of its stomach open with his claws.

The beast immediately moved aside to counterattack. The only thing standing in its way was one of the humans with a long knife. While the bear had been distracted by Theo's attack, this man had rushed in from the side and slit open the throat of the bear.

While the bear was dying from blood loss and the inability to properly breathe, it bit off the head of the man that had granted it this mortal wound.

Until its final heartbeat the beast still tried to kill as many creatures as it could find, only to eventually fall to the ground and bleed out.

But the battle wasn't over. Now Theo was the threat.

Being a lot more agile than the bear he managed to easily pin one of the remaining men to the ground.

"By the gods!" One of them jelled. "Is he already infected? How could that happen so quickly?"

However, no one had the chance to answer as Theo had already killed the man.

In a desperate attempt to save the man that already died, the one that had called out tried to kick Theo away from the corpse. Only, his attack didn't land. He kicked nothing but air and Theo had already jumped away.

At this point the remaining archer used his bow to hold Theo by the throat in order to stop him from pursuing his attack.

Though this did stop him for a moment Theo managed to break free by knocking the man over with his tail.

The man fell over clutching his stomach, but his actions were not in vain. Johan and the other knife wielder managed to pin Theo to the ground.

The archer quickly got up and took the place of Johan allowing him to take out his knife.

"I'm sorry bud. But we can't let something like you run around killing anything that moves. I hope you understand."

Failing to understand his words Theo snarled at the human holding the blade.

As Johan tried to kill him, he managed to protect himself with one of his wings. The cut created by this was long and deep completely tearing through the membrane of his wing.

The sudden pain made him snap back to reality.

Now with a clear mind he managed to kick the two men holding him off. Now free he stumbled backwards and wiped the blood from his mouth.

"I-I'm back. Please don't kill me." he managed to stutter while visibly trembling.

"The fuck was that all about?" The remaining archer yelled.

Theo was still trying to get a hold of reality again, while the man placed an arow on his bow. "By the gods, you actually killed someone. How could you!"

Theo looked down at the blood that now covered his hand and then saw the body of the man he had attacked.

At that moment he felt his heart drop. Had he actually killed a human? That had never happened before. His parents had always managed to lock him up before things got that bad. Why didn't anyone stop him?

With wide eyes he stared at the people in front of him. All of them pointing their weapons at him like he was going to charge at them in the next second.

This was his fault. He should have snapped out if it sooner. Then he wouldn't have accidentally killed someone. The humans had done all they could. If it had not been for him then this innocent man that had agreed to search for food to give to the people inside the walls would not have died.
