Chapter 42

  Sonja

Shaking after my encounter with Sergio, I grabbed what I could of the sheets and wrapped them around me. I'd almost been... I couldn't even bear to think of it. Jasper was cut, bad, dark blood all over him. He'd fought so hard to save me. Sergio's eyes met mine, a hunger that threatened to devour me in their depths. Looking away from him, I met the gaze of an older woman. Her gray hair was pulled into a severe bun, and her dark eyes were narrowed on me.

"Human," she barked, snapping her fingers. "Know your place, kneel now, or I will have your head."

"No, you won't," Jasper countered, struggling to his feet. Even now the cuts on him slowly healed, even the deep gash that carved through his neck. "Whatever you have to say to me, you can say to my future wife."

"Like hell she is," growled Sergio.
