Too Inhumane

The pressurizing silence between them continued until Valerie opened her mouth.

"Don't leave the country uselessly tomorrow."

She was planning to cancel the engagement after all, and he shouldn't make the journey thus, wasting his time.

Before she could continue, Lucian sneered. He wasn't exactly surprised she knew of his plans. He didn't take any extra measures in explicitly hiding it.

"How pathetic you are, clinging on to me like that," he commented, "do you think this persistency of yours make this engagement happen?"

Following that, he brought his face closer to hers. A dangerous glint crossed through his eyes as he added, "Just because I have been silent over this doesn't mean I am allowing you to manipulate this situation as you want; it is merely that I do not wish to sweat over this pointless matter and ruin my day by dealing with likes of you."

Stepping back, he ran his hand through his hair and voiced out, "You really need to get off that high horse of yours. It's a truly disturbing sight."

Valerie didn't flinch at his attitude. Her eyes were blank as they stared at the man. Although her chest squeezed painfully, she knew this is what she deserved from him.

His face then contorted in derision, and he laughed humorlessly. His eyes that stared at her had unadulterated hatred in them, but Valerie did notice the pain in them too.

"You are really too inhumane. How can you act so nonchalantly and pretend everything is peachy about us getting engaged after you ruined everything? Shouldn't it be too shameless even for you? Do you think back to what you have done?"

Then, with bitterness in his tone, he added, "Of course, how can I forget? You have no emotions. Not now and not even back then."

Unable to bear the sight of her any longer, he clenched his jaw and walked away. Although he had said all that, there was no shift in mood from her. What had he expected?

Back then, she didn't feel an ounce of guilt, let alone now.

Valerie watched his figure get smaller.

Storm brewed beneath that cold façade of hers. Although she tried to prevent herself, events of that year began to fill in her mind, stripping her of every bit of control she had. A sharp pain travelled through her forehead.

This made Valerie alarmed, knowing that this wouldn't yield any positive result.

Hurriedly, she reached out into her bag. Desperation clouded her eyes as she began her uncoordinated search through the content. She was slipping away too fast, and in order to prevent that, she needed the medicines.

She panicked when she realized that they weren't in her bag, and before she could soothe her turbulent emotions, Valerie blacked out.

She closed her eyes.

And when she opened them the next second, a playful glint appeared in them— completely devoid of the usual coldness. The corner of her lips lifted to form a smirk, and she ran her hand through her hair.

"How can I let you go, My Dear Lucian?"

She ran her tongue over her lower lip as those eyes of her darkened, resembling a predator being about to catch a delicious prey.
