Seeing my puzzled face frustrated him even more. He scratched his head as he thought of how to better explain the situation. After a few seconds, his face suddenly lit up as if he had found the perfect way to explain the situation.
"I'm sure you received a title when you looked at your status window in the right, correct?"
"Yes sir, I received the title of death's successor"
"Yes, but have you not been curious as to why you have received such a title, after all in the tower, you were only meant to receive the ability to see your status window as well as only one passive skill and yet you have not one but two skills as well as a title...…. Does this make any sense to you?" Hades asked.
I had indeed found it strange that I had received two skills as well as a title, but I had simply dismissed it as me being a special case, similar to how a person could have multiple talents.
"Judging by your simple expression, I can guess that you thought that you were some sort of special case or something"
Wow! His thoughts were right on the money!
"How Foolish!" Hades exclaimed as he sighed heavily at the moronic insect in front of him.
"I will now explain why such an abnormality has occurred to you as well as others"
"Wait….others?" I asked, completely surprised by his statement.
"Yes, did you think that you were the only one to receive two skills and a title! How foolish you are!" He shouted as he glared at me.
My heart sank into my chest at his words. So I wasn't the only one with two skills…. Which would mean that I wasn't the only special person in this life as well.
Tch...Ahhh…..well shit, I'm fucked!
Hades saw how depressed I was and tried to cheer me up.
"Don't get me wrong child, I said you weren't the only one with two skills but that doesn't mean that there are a lot of people in your situation either. I'd say there are probably around 100,000 people in your situation and if you were to compare it to the billions of players that exist in the tower, then I would say that you are a unique person in the tower."
I see….so there were others like me but compared to the total people in the tower, they could be considered miniscule which would indeed make me special. The thought of this cheered me up as a smile unwillingly spread across my face.
"However, don't think that your path will be easy just because you have two abilities. On the contrary it will be much harder I can assure you of that.." said Hades deliberately trying to crush my spirit once more.
"So anyway, you wanted to explain why I have two skills, Sir."
"Ahh yes." He said as he snapped his fingers. "So, the reason why you have two skills is because you have been chosen as a successor. I'm sure you are wondering what a successor is. Well, a successor is someone who will one day take the position of a god for whom they have been chosen to replace. Let me explain further"
He grabbed a nearby stick and began to draw strange symbols on the sand as he spoke.
"In this tower, there is usually one objective that a player is meant to accomplish which is to climb to the top of the tower and have their wish granted, however what people do not know there is also another option available to players, which is to become divine beings or rather to become gods."
"To become a god! Is that even possible?" I asked in amazement.
"Of course, it is, however in order to become one you have to be chosen as a successor by a divine being. There is also the option of using your wish to become a god however that would simply make you into a low rank god or a powerful demigod instead."
"Why though? Isn't the tower supposed to be omnipotent?"
"The tower is powerful but not omnipotent. Zeus told you people that in order to get your hopes up but while powerful enough to bind even us divine beings with restrictions, it isn't omnipotent. Converting a mortal into a god is extremely difficult with a success rate of 5% due to the enormous difference in the body structure as well as the overall divine power and soul of a god in comparison to the meagre, pathetic soul essence of human beings and hence most of the time when players wish to become gods, they become powerful demigods or a low rank god instead. Demigods are extremely powerful beings when compared to players however they are still weaker than gods and although they live longer than the average human being, they are not immortal and hence they die at some point which is why is much better to become a god through being selected as a successor which usually has a 90% success rate of becoming a god."
"Low rank gods are the weakest gods who could even be said to be of similar strength to some powerful demigods so it was essentially similar to becoming a powerful demigod except low rank gods were immortal and hence could live forever if they were not fatally injured. However it is still much easier to become a god by being their successor as it would grant a person the chance to become a high ranking god."
I see…. It did make a lot of sense to become a god as a successor however the fact that I was a successor meant that I was chosen by a divine being. The question was...which divine being was foolish enough to choose someone like me?
"It would seem that you are wondering which divine being chose you as a successor," said Hades as he looked at the expression of my face.
"It was me." He said as he smiled coldly sending shivers down my spine. Why would Hades choose me as his successor? The only logical conclusion was that he was just toying with me.
"I chose you as a successor because I find you interesting. I mean who dies at exactly midnight on New Year's Day. The fact that you were able to die at exactly midnight was so strange that on that day I became interested in you. Hence, I decided that instead of sending you off to the underworld, I would rather much have you as a player since the time of your death was also coincidentally the time for the tower of chaos to select new players so I tweaked your death a bit and was able to revive you as a player. However the other gods found it unfair that I was using my abilities as a god to bring back to life someone who had already died and hence in order to convince them to let you come back, I suggested choosing you as my successor in exchange for letting you come back to life, to which they agreed and hence the reason as to why you are now very much alive." He said as he continued to draw strange symbols in a circle on the ground.
"..."
So, I owed my life to Hades, that didn't exactly make me happy, but it did change my perspective of him a little.
